The New York Yankees are in a funk. Their latest losses against the cross-town rivals, New York Mets in the Subway Series as well as getting swept by the Boston Red Sox have brought spirits down. Fans are eagerly awaiting the return of their captain, who is on his second IL stint of the season. Aaron Judge adds a lot of offensive power to his team behind the bat. After all, 2022 was the year he broke Roger Maris’ single-season home run record at 62.
Not only that but standing at 6ft 7in, Judge is a powerful presence in the outfield too. Aaron Judge’s MLB career has seen him frequently show off some great moves, stealing balls left and right. However, one of those flashy displays recently left him in a sticky situation and led him to an injury. It has been weeks since Judge has played any game, and there is still no clarity on his injury. What could be the reason?

During the Yankees’ West Coast trip, the Aaron Boone-led side clashed against the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 3. While running to catch the ball in the outfield, Judge ran straight into the right fence wall at Dodger Stadium. MLB has seen some amazing plays but this one topped the list. All-Rise managed to keep the ball in his hand and continued playing but things went downhill after that. Once again, the Bronx Bombers are dealing with an Aaron Judge injury. He has now not played in several weeks, although the team has been giving some updates.
Everyone is waiting for the swelling to go down, which happens slowly when the injury is in the foot. The official diagnosis reads that it’s a contusion and sprain of the toe but no fracture. While the progress is slow, the team is clearly hopeful, even if there haven’t been any conclusive updates. In fact, even the manager doesn’t seem to know what exactly is going on.
“I am just as curious as you guys are”: Aaron Boone says he knows nothing about Judge’s injury
Although the Yankees put the captain on the 10-day injured list, most fans think it’s an overestimation. After all, Judge himself gave a cryptic update, stating there’s no strict timetable for a return. Because apparently there’s more to the injury than meets the eye. Even Aaron Boone doesn’t know what’s happening.

A few days ago, it was revealed that Judge had received a second platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in his toe, this time in a different place. “My understanding is, the ligament should heal over time,” Boone told MLB.com. “Any time you strain or tear in the ligament, it takes time to heal that. PRPs hopefully speed that process up. Hopefully, he’s continuing to move in the right direction.”
But ultimately, even the manager doesn’t seem to know exactly what’s going on with his player. However, it seems like there’s a good reason for that – a federal law.
What is HIPAA law? Why does no one know about Aaron Judge’s injury?
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was established in 1996 to protect sensitive patient health information. It’s a federal law that safeguards a patient from their information being disclosed without their consent or knowledge. Additionally, a privacy rule states that the information cannot be disclosed to ‘covered entities’, meaning those who are directly affected by the health information.

In Judge’s case, it includes the Yankees organization and of course, Aaron Boone. This law is a big reason no one seems to know much about Judge’s toe, nor give an estimate about a recovery period. Fans are sorely missing their captain on the diamond though, and are eager to see him back in action.

When will Aaron Judge return?
Aaron Judge’s MLB return is unclear. The team’s future seems to be in jeopardy with their latest series of losses. Aaron Judge and Aaron Boone have given fans nothing to go on, and the future seems murky. As of now, the Yankees skipper seems hopeful, “We feel like he was [improving], but that other part of the joint or the toe was still giving him some problems after the first PRP. To get in and hit the other parts of it hopefully is something that speeds that up.”
Now it’s just a waiting game to see when the swelling goes down, which could take from the next week to four weeks. Although Boone said Judge could return before the July 11 All-Star Game, nothing seems certain.
