It’s not always that cemeteries have the spookiest stories surrounding them, ra old hotels, too, hold that ghostly charm! The rich history and ever-changing guests are a magnet for paranormal rumors and stories to make rounds. We have all heard of the famous Cecil Hotel—a fine example of darkness and disturbance. So much so that Netflix has a show on it. But did you know that baseball has its own spooky legend?

Haven’t we all seen those movies where an actor ventures into a haunted place and ends up facing something terrifying—or worse, meets their grim fate? Well, Mookie Betts is no dummy; and he wants nothing to do with ghosts. So he is smart enough to steer clear of the spooky baseball hotel everyone keeps talking about. Seriously, who wants to mess with the otherworldly stuff when there’s a game to win and a championship to go after?
Hence it’s no surprise that Mookie Betts refused to stay at the team’s hotel in Milwaukee. And this isn’t his first time keeping a distance from the underworldly creatures, he did the same last year. Mookie Betts last year chose to stay away from the Dodgers team and instead booked an Airbnb. This time yet again, he booked himself an Airbnb where he can rest, rejuvenate, and concentrate on baseball gameplay. But well, did Mookie Betts experience anything to be this spooked? Betts confirms that while he hasn’t encountered them firsthand, the stories themselves make him paranoid. But he did stay there before! “But I couldn’t sleep. Every noise I’d be like, is that something?” said Mookie Betts on staying at the Pfister Hotel.

And as far as stories go about the hotel, there are plenty. Since Halloween is soon approaching, what better than to binge on some spooky tales and sightings of the haunted hotel? One look at the Pfister Hotel and you’d be mesmerized—it’s stunning. But don’t go by the looks, because, once one checks in, who knows if they might ever check out? The stellar hotel is a century old and was built in 1893 by Guido Pfister and his son Charles Pfister and was then the “most lavish hotel of its time.” But over the years, eerie stories have come out of the hotel, and not everything can be explained!
The first instance will raise the hair in your hands. Michael Young, the former Rangers player reported that he isn’t one to spread ghost stories, but the ghostly experience- he felt it. He said, “A couple of years ago, I was lying in bed after a night game, and I was out. My room was locked, but I heard these footsteps inside my room, stomping around.”
Then, in 2015, MVP Award winner Bryce Harper came forward to share his story. Harper had laid out his clothes and pants on a table before going to bed and when he woke up, he was taken aback. So much so, that he had to be moved into a different room. “When I woke up in the morning – I swear on everything -the clothes were on the floor and the table was on the opposite side of the room against the wall,” Harper said.

And no, the incidents still haven’t stopped. The recent incident reported was just in 2023 by Brent Rooker. The Oakland Athletics standout said, something or should we say someone kept changing his TV channels in the room. “I’ll have it on like Golf Channel and I’ll be on my laptop looking down. I look back up and it’s on QVC or some other channel that definitely is not Golf Channel,” Rooker said to MLB.com writer Martín Gallegos. Given that Milwaukee as a whole has a rich history of such eerie activities and that Bob Weiss, a ghost tour guide, said- “A lot of things linger here” it adds more chills down the spine.
Flickering lights, changing channels, air-con switched on and off, and odd radioactivity were all reported by players. In 2016, Ji-Man Choi even reported the chilling incident of how he felt a spirit in bed! It’s no surprise, given the intensity of horror and terror in the hotel, that Mookie Betts declined to stay here. Have you encountered anything similar at any time? Let us know your stories.
