After offenses seemingly settled, the race for pitchers is on. Multiple teams are looking for their starting throwers in the market. The list includes the New York Yankees. Notably, the former champions want their mound to be at its best for the 2024 campaign and are desperately making moves to make it happen. Understandably so. However, after failed pursuits and much deliberations, the former champions have roads to travel in Jordon Montgomery and Blake Snell. But whom should they approach?

Given the Yankees have not won a championship since 2009, they are in search of a stronger version of themselves. For this, they want the best and in-form players in the squad. Certainly, Montgomery, with a World Series win, and Snell, with his Cy Young Award, fit that demand. But with a single spot to fill primarily, they can sign only the best. It brings the question for them and all: Who is a better lefty pitcher in the two? Can stats answer this if they don’t lie?

Jordan Montgomery or Blake Snell? Who Does the Stats Back as the Best Pitcher?

Both 1992-born pitchers have been instrumental in the league. While Jordan Montgomery started his MLB journey with the New York Yankees, Blake Snell made it to the big stage with the Tampa Bay Rays. However, both have moved to new teams and are on the move again, with New York possibly being the destination. But given all the similarities, there are some differences between the two. What does their past say about this?

Notably, both pitchers made their MLB debuts one after another and have been regular on the mound. Jordan, who debuted in 2017, has played 141 games and has won 71 games during this at an ERA of 3.68, claiming 705 strikeouts. While Snell, after debuting in 2016, has played 191 games and has taken 1223 strikeouts at an ERA of 3.20.

However, in comparison, Snell is ahead in the battle. Also, if the hit trajectory is considered, has averaged better than Montogomery, except in line drives, where he has allowed a BA of 0.626. He has a better WAR (3.8)  than Montgomery (3.0). Moreover, the former Padres has won two Cy Young Awards, which adds to his profile, even though he has yet to win the World Series like Montgomery. This makes the 2024 National League’s best pitcher the option for the Yankees. But is there any other factor that can impact this decision?

How Did Snell and Montgomery Performed at the Bronx in the Past? Whom the New York Yankees Should Sign?

A home is a home, whether on a personal level or professional level. As if any of Snell and Montgomery signs for the Yankees, they need to play well at home. In this case, the past can provide an idea: Who has been better at the Bronx? Montgomery, being a former Yankee has played 48 games at the Bronx stadium. He has recorded  250 strikeouts while allowing a home run per second start and averaging a So/w ratio of 3.68. This gives him an edge because of Snell’s performances in limited opportunities at this stadium.

The former American League’s best pitcher has played 12 games and has allowed 11 HRs in those appearances while averaging a So/w ratio of 1.67. This indicates his struggles in the Bronx, plus his unfamiliarity adds to the negatives. But given that all that is in the past and the management can handle this issue, they can go for Blake Snell.
