Tuesday was a somber day in the Dominican Republic. A devastating roof collapse at the Jet Set Nightclub in Santo Domingo resulted in the loss of at least 58 people. Relatives of the victims flocked to the scene in search of their loved ones. Meanwhile, the police reported that at least 160 other people were injured. Additionally, around 400 rescue personnel were still trying to locate survivors amidst the rubble. Reports indicate that Nelsy Cruz, sister of the former MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, was among the casualty list.

On another gloomy note, former major league reliever Octavio Dotel and former utilityman Tony Blanco were also reportedly among the misfortunates who lost their lives at night. As the entire MLB is mourning the loss of lives, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred shared a heartbreaking message in honor of the late Dotel, Blanco, Nelsy, and all of the victims of the sorrowful night. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been affected and to our colleague Nelson and his entire family,” Manfred penned down. Nelsy is survived by her parents and two siblings: Olga and Nelson Cruz. The 44-year-old Dominican American is known as a prominent name in the baseball community. Over his career, Nelson played for several MLB teams, including the

Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, and Minnesota Twins, among others. He was selected as an MLB All-Star seven times during his career. Known for his exceptional power-hitting, Cruz earned two Edgar Martínez Awards and four Silver Slugger Awards. Throughout his 18-year MLB career, Cruz hit 464 home runs and recorded 1,325 RBIs, showcasing his remarkable hitting abilities during his prime. As a government official, Nelsy reportedly remained committed to her responsibilities until the very end.

The renowned Jet Set club was hosting merengue singer Rubby Perez when its roof suddenly collapsed. Officials have yet to determine the cause of the roof collapse, and the search for survivors is still ongoing. According to The Associated Press, in a desperate moment during the tragic collapse of the Jet Set Nightclub roof, Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of MLB legend Nelson Cruz, reached out for help. At 12:49 a.m., she made a call to President Luis Abinader, informing him that she was trapped under the rubble. First Lady Raquel Arbaje later confirmed this heartbreaking detail to reporters, describing the call as a testament to Nelsy’s courage in her final moments. Despite rescue efforts, Cruz succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, leaving behind a legacy as a devoted leader and public servant.

I deeply regret the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Nelsy Cruz, governor of Montecristi province, which occurred in the tragic event at the Jet Set nightclub,” wrote Dominican Minister of Culture Roberto Ángel Salcedo in his message of condolence. “Her death is an irreparable loss for her community and the entire country. Nelsy was a committed public servant, a woman of steadfast leadership, and an unwavering ally in initiatives aimed at strengthening our identity and development.” Her passing is not only a profound loss for the Cruz family but also for the entire community.
