It’s getting tougher for both the Mets and Pete Alonso to replace each other. While Alonso is yet to find his next home, the Mets are also checking for a proper Alonso replacement. As per the rumors, there are multiple free agents the Mets are in contact with, but nothing concrete yet. So, any possible alternatives?
Yes, but the number of alternatives is going south with time and there is a very limited window of opportunities left for the Mets. Now, the most surprising fact is irrespective of these challenges and Alonso still being available, they are not shaking hands. Alonso is not interested in continuing with the Mets or vice versa? So, without Alonso, who are the players still available for the Mets?

Reportedly, the Mets offered a deal to Pete Alonso for 3 years worth $70 million, which was rejected by the latter. Why? Because the slugger is believed to be looking for $200 million, which the Mets are currently not interested in. So, hardball is getting played by their end as well, which indicates that the Mets are already in pursuit of Alonso’s replacement and are no longer going hard for him. But again, why are the Mets letting go of their star player?
It’s the mediocre performance of Alonso in recent years and his age. Alonso ended 2024 with his career-worst .788 OPS and 172 strikeouts. Also, with 34 HRs and 88 RBIs, he is not justifying his slugger role as well. Lastly, Alonso is now 31 years and hence, the Mets might not be interested in offering him more than a three-year deal rather, they will look for future talents. So yes, the chance of Pete Alonso returning to the Mets is unlikely now. It would then be better to look for the options available for the Mets here.
Triston Casas: Long-term option
Casas can be a potent and younger alternative to Alonso in the 1B. Reportedly, the Red Sox are looking to trade him and the Mets can be a potential home for him. Casas came to the limelight courtesy of his slugging power, despite his limited exposure in 2024 due to injury. He only played 63 games with 13 HRS and 32 RBIs. But it is his 2023 season with 24 HRs and 65 RBIs that the Mets should consider. However, the Red Sox plans to trade Casas for a third baseman and the rookie 3B Brett Baty can be a potential option for trading. Casas is currently 25 years and hence the Mets can offer him a long-term deal for the future.
Anthony Rizzo: A veteran replacement
A veteran with tons of experience like Rizzo can be a proper replacement for Pete Alonso. While his performance in a few previous seasons is nothing worthy, the former all-star and World Series champion can add value in the postseason for the Mets. His last year postseason performance for the Yankees stands at .267/.421/.300 in 38 plate appearances. He can be an effective one-year option for the Mets without breaking the bank and can be serving till the Mets go for Vlad next year. Yes, Rizzo cannot be a multi-year option, but his risk-taking appetite is what the Mets can leverage for their postseason games.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr: Mets’ fav pick
The dream replacement for Pete Alonso will always be Guerrero for the Mets. Why? Because Vlad is only 25 years old and yet to reach his prime, quite aligned with the plan of the Mets and he is coming with 30 HR and 103 RBIs in 2024. Reportedly, the Blue Jays are not willing to offer an extension to Vlad, which will make him a free agent. So yes, Vlad should be the first option for the Mets once he is in free agency and should go all out for him, similar to their Juan Soto deal.
Anthony Santander: Complicated option for the Mets

Well, Santander can be a potent yet complex alternative. How so? He can replace Alonso only in defense and not in offense with only 13 games he had played at 1B. Also, he had played only 1 game at 1B in 2024, but his past season performances are what make this deal sweeter. He scored 44 HRs and 102 RBIs for the Orioles in 2024 and how can the Mets avoid this stat? Additionally, Santander is available with short-term deals also, which the Mets can tap to replace Pete Alonso. But with multiple teams behind him, the time’s ticking for the Mets to land him.
