Barry Bonds – the loner, the legend. Equally loved and hated in his legacy, the former San Francisco Giants player is controversy brought to life. MLB has seen many a player raise eyebrows for their off-the-field behavior, but none quite like Bonds. Even his musical tastes brought him under fire once.

The one thing that makes Bonds unique is perhaps his absolutely phenomenal statistics. Sure, some of them came from alleged steroid use, but many still consider him the true ‘Home Run King’. That is not to say that he was unpopular with the masses, of course. And once, it was because of his choice to support non-Black artists.

When Jeff Pearlman’s 2006 book on the Giants icon, Love Me, Hate Me, was released, it created upheaval in the sports world. It was an unauthorized biography based upon Pearlman’s interactions with a number of people associated with Bonds, but not the ballplayer himself. Among the many allegations made, one was about his favorite artists.

On page 225, Pearlman writes, “Whereas black players filled the San Francisco clubhouse with the beats of Tupac, Nas, Missy Elliott, and Jay-Z, Bonds’s four favorite performers are Barbra Streisand, Kenny G., Michael Bolton, and Celine Dion.”

According to the book’s writer, who had been conversing with Eric Davis and Shawon Dunston, Bonds’ preferences bothered them. He liked predominantly White artists instead of the above-mentioned singers usually playing on the radio. This fact somehow only made for more bad blood between the already warring teammates.

Interestingly, Bonds once met with Bolton in the 90s, and decades later shared a throwback picture.

It was met with much fan frenzy when the original picture was taken and the revival caused equal fanfare. Now only if Bonds would recreate the moment with other artists.
