Derek Jeter, Bobby Shantz and the latest Anthony Volpe have one thing in common. These big names of the New York Yankees are the recipients of the prestigious Gold Glove in the past. But despite the starry perception of the Yankees with these awards under their belt, they don’t stand at the top. Then who does?

It is awarded yearly to the players in the American League (AL) and National League (NL) who have demonstrated exceptional fielding and defensive skills throughout the season. With that, it’s time to unravel which team has bagged the most Gold Gloves. 

Where Do the New York Yankees Stand on the Coveted List?

2023 results are in, and they range from an incredible streak being broken to individual and team history being made. On 5th November, the results were revealed and 13 winners are first-timers, which is the second-highest number since the award’s founding in 1957. Moreover, two rookies from each league received one Gold Glove Award. With that one question arises, which team has won the most number of Gold Glove awards? 

Well, as per statmuse.com, the St. Louis Cardinals have managed to bag the most number of Gold Gloves and the mega franchise trails in a close 2nd. With some talented pitchers on the team, one expects to see the Bronx Bombers on the top of the list.

But they stand in the 2nd position with 45 awards to their name. The one topping the list is the Cardinals with 53. Trailing behind these the two toppers are the Atlanta Braves, the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers. That said, isn’t it inevitable to get curious about the man with the most GG Awards?  

The Man With the Most Number of Gold Gloves

When it comes to baseball players who have won the most Gold Glove awards, there is an obvious winner. Greg Maddux has won the Gold Glove on an incredible 18 occasions while playing pitcher. He won 13 consecutive awards from 1990 to 2002, all in the National League. Maddux made his first comeback in 1990, starting a 13-year streak during which he won the National League’s pitchers Gold Glove Award for which is prominently known today.

The former Los Angeles Dodgers player had complete control over the award, making it almost impossible for many other gifted players to even come close to it. There was one exception, though. There was only one other man who was a close contender at that level, Brooks Robinson. He won the Gold Glove 16 times while playing third base, and is known as the only player who can compete with Maddux. He reigned with these awards between 1960 to 1975.
