The light of dawn has fallen upon a new season of baseball and Opening Day 23 had been a thrilling one. But even amidst the excitement of the game, whispers and rumors were swirling in the air about contract extensions for players off the field. And now, those whispers have taken shape and become reality as the San Diego Padres are officially in agreement with Jake Cronenworth on a 7-year contract extension. 

The news comes on the heels of the Padres’ recent signing of Manny Machado, who was extended to an 11-year deal. Now, with Cronenworth’s extension, the Padres have reinforced their resolution to building a strong team with their veterans.

The news of Jake Cronenworth’s contract extension with the San Diego Padres has fans befuddled. At 29 years old, the infielder was going to hit free agency after the 2025 season, but Padres didn’t want to let that happen it seems.

Although the contract amount is yet to be disclosed, it’s bound to be a hefty one. But while some fans are thrilled at the news, others are starting to worry. With all this money being spent, will there be anything left to sign fan-favorite Juan Soto

Of course, not everyone is convinced that the Padres’ spending spree is a good thing. Some are skeptical and have pointed out that the team has been struggling with a losing streak since Opening Day 23. And are wondering whether the extension is going to pay off in the end.

But for now, that Cronenworth is in for the long haul with the Padres, they have locked in yet another veteran to their talented roster.

Jake Cronenworth’s strikeout rate increased last season with a line dip of .266/ .340/ .460 in 2021 to .239/ .332/ .390 in 2022. However, he managed to hit 38 home runs and regained his footsteps. This season, he is slated to bat fifth, in the opening lineup.

The San Diego Padres are all about keeping their talent in-house. Recent months have seen the team signing extensions with Machado, Yu Darvish, Jose Musgrove, and now, Cronenworth. Rumors have also been swirling that they might sign a contract extension with Juan Soto very soon.
