Marcus Stroman, the right-hander, and the New York Yankees formally shook hands. The two-year contract value is a $37 million that materialized on Wednesday. Soon after Stroman knew that he’d be a Yankee, he posted a picture on Instagram of the pinstripe uniform with #0 on it. Stroman the ‘O-man’?

The 32-year-old who wore 0 for the New York Mets and for the Chicago Cubs is now set to embrace his new number in the Bronx. Wearing the goose egg is a special deal. Additionally, as one dives deeper, the saga of the ‘Heroes of Zero’ comes to light.

Yankees Videos took to Twitter to share an important tidbit about the Yanks’ latest pitcher acquisition. The tweet read, “Per Marcus Stroman’s Instagram, he will wear number 0 with the Yankees”. Now there is more than one reason why this is special. Going zero-clad means that Stroman becomes the third Yankee in franchise history to do so. With history repeating itself, one can make performance predictions too.

Pitchers Adam Ottavino and Domingo Germán had worn No. 0 in the pinstripes. Germán in fact threw a perfect game proudly donning the goose egg. This marked the pioneering perfect game or even no-hitter recorded by a player donning that jersey number. With ‘Stro’ choosing #0, he stands in the fourth place in the list of MLB’s all-time Heroes of Zero. He has Al Oliver,  Junior Ortiz and Ottavino ahead of him who have worn zero for 6,4 and 4 teams respectively. This brings us to another interesting bit.

Before switching to 0, the 2014 MLB debutant had worn three different single-digit jerseys in his career. He wore No. 7 when he was with the Mets and No. 6 when he was with the Toronto Blue Jays. In the off season of 2019, he stated that he wished to give up No. 7 in honor of Jose Reyes. Which is when he announced on twitter that he would be taking up #0. Could there be any numerical implication for Stroman’s new beginning in the Bronx?
