Not long after Hall of Famer Derek Jeter started playing baseball at the mere age of five, he started dreaming of playing shortstop for the New York Yankees. Needless to say, Jeter worked hard more than many and earned his spot on the roster. However, it does not mean that Captain Clutch did not go through any failures. At one time, while playing in the minors, Derek had made a record of making the most number of errors in history. Even so, he did not give up and continued to work even harder. And one day, after jumping through every hurdle that came his way, falling through some, he got back up and became the face of modern baseball.

Eight years after bidding farewell to the game, Jeter released his seven-part docuseries, The Captain. The documentary had some of the never seen or heard Jeter stories. And in one of the episodes of the documentary, Mr. November spoke about willingly giving up after going through some tough times. He did so, while taking a shot at the franchise he played for his entire career.

Hence, while talking about giving up willingly, after going through a rough patch or a failure, Derek Jeter said, “What kind of s**t is that? That’s what I would say. You think I’m not a team player? As a competitor, you go out there like you got to prove to everyone else and yourself that you can turn shit around. That’s what you do. I haven’t given up a day in my life, and I’m not gonna give up a day in my life. Now, if they felt this (that DJ needed to move down the lineup) though, they wanted to send me down, they wanted to move me down, and if they do it, then hey, being a team player, I’m not gonna complain. I’m gonna do it.”

Furthermore, Jeter added, that he’s willing to go down the lineup if the team wants it, but he won’t ever himself volunteer for the same. According to him, “that’s just the wrong mindset, you know, champions don’t have that mindset. When shit gets hard, that’s when you prove people wrong.”

A human, like DJ, has also made mistakes in his career!

The moment when DJ had the most errors in the minors as a shortstop, he had the chance to change positions and turn things around for him. But he didn’t give up. Instead, he worked hard and proved that he deserved to play shortstop.

In one of the other moments, when Jeter had just made his MLB debut, things weren’t going right for him. Hence, at that moment, he could have accepted his fate and went back to the minors. But again, he didn’t do it. And the rest is history. Jeter might be annoyed at the ones wanting to give up, but all he wants is for them to achieve greatness.
