On Thursday, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees faced each other for the first time in 2023. This spring training game did not have as much heat as a Bronx vs Boston game usually does, but it still provided enough entertainment to baseball fans. Because of the ongoing World Baseball Classic, many players from both teams are away, but the fans were still clamoring for blood.

A legendary feud that has spanned more than a century, both the Red Sox and Yankees have a loyal fan base that probably cares more about the rivalry than the players today. That’s not to say there haven’t been iconic moments in the past. Remember?Thurman Munson?and?Carlton Fisk? Or more recently, Jorge Posada and Pedro Martinez? Players and fans alike have long fueled the fire of rivalry for decades, and this time, the win goes to Boston.

In a simple tweet, the Pinstripes’ official account said, “FINAL: Boston 11, Yankees 7.” Even though the New York team performed better than the Red Sox in the last season, the first win of 2023 went to the latter. While Bronx fans stewed in their misery, Red Sox fans took to commenting about how proud they were of their team.

One Yankees fan asked if Tyler Danish had tweeted the news because the Yankees pitcher is among the few players who’ve been on both sides of the rivalry. Even though Danish’s current contract is for the minor league, he was invited to spring training.

Some Yankees fans were also excited about Jasson Dom?nguez, better known as The Martian. His out-of-this-world homers have set him apart and spring training seems to be going exceptionally well this year.

Notably, given the Yankees have a stronger squad compared to the Red Sox, this defeat was a shock for the Pinstripes fans.

Making enemies in sports is a run-of-the-mill thing. High on adrenaline, sometimes players end up provoking others to such a level that they’re adversaries for life. It becomes an even bigger deal when a whole team is involved, as followers of the Boston vs the Bronx saga know only too well. But in recent years, some people have not been as attracted to the drama as before.

For one, games between the two teams have become all too common to retain the rivalry’s novelty. Some things are only precious when they’re rare. Another reason is the different paces at which the two teams seem to be moving. Following the 2018 World Series win, the Red Sox have missed three out of four postseason appearances. The Yankees have not won a championship since 2009, but their postseason appearance has been strong for six straight seasons.
