MLB season is here, and while teams are chasing wins, let’s take a step back and revisit some wild records from the past. Sure, everyone knows who won the 2024 World Series, but do you know which team scored the most runs in a single game? That one might take some digging. And with some of today’s squads looking locked in, could we see a few of these historic records shattered this season?
The most runs scored in a match can be consolidated runs of the two teams, or one team scored the maximum runs. In terms of the most runs scored by one team in a game, we need to go back to 1897! Yes, the game dates back to the 19th century. The National League’s Chicago Colts (Cubs) thrash the Louisville Colonels 36-7, setting a new record for the most runs scored by a single club in a game. While the 1897 season of the Colts (now Cubs) was nothing impressive, their record-breaking game against the Colonels set a new chapter in American history. “Colts Make a Record” – the famous headline in the Chicago Tribune that day.
While this record is still unbroken, a few new milestones were set in the later stages. Coming back to the 20th century, in what was then called Cubs Park, the Chicago Cubs and Phillies managed to set the post-1900 record for most runs scored in a single MLB game at 49 runs. The game was dated August 25, 1922. The final score stood in favor of the Cubs at 26-23. This record still stands today. This also proves that historically, the Cubs are associated with any form of maximum runs in a game.

Back to the modern era in the 21st century. The Rangers set the record for scoring the most runs (30) in a single game in 2007 against the Orioles. Apart from the runs piled up by both teams, the game was known for a few more milestones. A minimum of one hit and one run was scored by each of the ten Rangers’ players. Additionally, as a team, the Rangers hit .509 and collected 29 hits, with five different players recording at least three hits.
Now, in 2025, are there any chances from among the current crop of teams to touch on these milestones?

Which teams can break the record for the highest runs in MLB?
It’s possible. With teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, and Mets all stacked up with talent, a new milestone or two is likely. The Dodgers are projected to break the 116-win season of the Cubs in 1906. The Dodgers are so dominating this season, and a 166-win season is highly likely. Moreover, they got Shohei Ohtani, who scored the first ever 50-50 season in MLB history. He is coming up with 134 runs from 2024. The team got Teoscar Hernandez (84 runs), Freddie Freeman (81 runs), and Mookie Betts (75 runs). Hence, with all these hitters coming together, any one game with the most runs is probable this year.
Yesterday’s game between the Yankees and the Brewers teased the splash of runs coming ahead this season. The Yankees’ veteran Aaron Judge’s 3 homers in the game set up a record-breaking run this season. The game ended with a 20-9 in the Yankees’ favor and had a consolidated 29 runs. Not far behind the 2007 game between the Rangers and Orioles. Moreover, the Yankees also scored a record 9 home runs in this match. It makes them the second-only team, alongside the Reds, to have 9 homers in a game. The Blue Jays hold the record for scoring the most home runs (10) in a game since 1987.
A few more records in terms of total runs, home runs, and strikeouts can be broken by the teams in 2025. With the lineup these top-tier teams got, it is their top chance to rewrite history. Well, records are meant to be broken.
