While the White Sox started their 2025 season with a win that even surprised their critics, it didn’t take them long to be on the receiving end of the fans again. Contrary to the previous seasons, this time the team is facing the fans’ wrath not for their on-field performance but rather for their crew performance. The heavy winds and rain during Sunday’s game against the Angels exposed their inefficiency in handling the situation. So, what caused the fans to get vocal against the club?

There was a weather forecast for rain on Sunday. Was the White Sox equipped and prepared for the situation? It doesn’t seem so. The comedy of errors started in the seventh inning of Sunday’s game. The rain came down quickly and heavily, making it difficult for the White Sox’s grounds crew to control the situation. What followed later was nothing but hilarious. The tarp became caught after covering about half of the infield, so the grounds crew had to look for other ways to keep the field safe.

The result was that the game got delayed, and the entire field was not covered in the rain. Only a patchwork is done to cover the infield, leaving the outfield exposed. Enough ingredients for the fans to cook against the White Sox, and expectedly, it all came down to flooding the X account. Fans are trolling the team from different angles; some of them are quite hilarious.

Fans are left unimpressed with the White Sox

It left the fans wondering if it would have been better if they had brought the tarps by themselves. Trolling the White Sox for their inefficiency in pulling up the field tarp job. One fan also trolled the typical low attendance in the White Sox game. He commented about how 100 tarps would be required, which equals the attendance in the field. For the unversed, the White Sox are ranked 13th among the 15 AL teams in terms of attendance. Their average attendance of 21,405 people in 2023 came down to 17,931 in 2024.

What’s your perspective on:

White Sox can't even cover a field—how can they cover their fans' expectations?

Have an interesting take?

It is normally expected that the full field will be covered in case of rain, storm, or snowfall. Expectedly, the White Sox were also supposed to do the same on Sunday. However, comparing a major league team with a college baseball team is a huge embarrassment, to say the least. It would be too early to conclude the White Sox were not ready to cover the entire field. It’s just that the umpires waited till the last to ask for ground cover. Hence, it became difficult for the crews to pull up the cover with the heavy rains.

Fans asking the team owners to sell the team owing to their bad performance is common, but asking to sell the team for not putting tarps on the ground? Might be the first time in the MLB history! It looks obvious that the fans are quite frustrated with the team overall, and this tarp incident was just a point of outburst. Expected when a team finishes a season with a 41-121 record.

What a good way for the Cubs fan to all guns blazing against the White Sox. While the rivalry between the Cubs and White Sox gets enough fanfare in Chicago, the tarp incident was a too chance for the Cubs fans to let go of. A Cubs fan shared his disappointment for the White Sox and cheered for the Cubs. Well, the figures are on his side with the Cubs winning 7 of the last 10 games against the White Sox.

It seems like the White Sox cannot do anything right. At least a fan thinks so. Well, if their last year’s performance is anything to go, fans are right. Not only did the club earn an unwarranted record of amassing the most losses in a year (121), but it also became the only MLB team to have three losing streaks of at least ten games. Since 20225, the White Sox and World Series got no contact between the two, fans can’t expect anything right from this team anymore.
