Does A-Rod deserve a spot in Monument Park, or is his legacy too controversial for the Yankees?

A-rod has posted another gem on his Instagram page. With a heartfelt tribute video for his beloved Yankees, Alex was seen celebrating the 15 years of their Yankee’s iconic 2009 World Series win. Days after making his debut at the Yankees’ Old Timers’ Day, he recalled memories of a victory he played a huge part in. You must be wondering, then, why did it take so long for him to debut at the Yankees’ Old Timers’ Day!

Well, that’s solely because his journey with the Bronx has been full of ups and downs, and it seems like some of his former teammates might still be processing those. But the 49-year-old appears to have moved on from the past. His latest tribute video captioned, “What a team,” will surely take you on a trip down memory lane. Do you remember the 10-year challenge on Insta, A-rod has taken that over in his style. Plus, his background music choice ‘spirits’ by The Strumbellas is just spot on.

The video starts with a clip of the New York Yankees, 2009 team lifting the trophy and hugging it out! Indeed, it was a good day. They won after 9 years. Then, the videos cuts to an old picture of CC Sabathia, the Yankees pitcher (then) , and then boom, cut to his entry in the old-timer celebration, 2024. Well, similarly, he included the whole iconic team, including Derek Jeter, and at last was the Pay rod himself.

As soon as it was uploaded it gained a storm of fan comments, with them saying, “Retire 13, put him in the Monument Park”. Well, that’s something the baseball star wants for himself too. See, we all know Monument Park and the Hall of Fame are big deals. It is a way to immortalize your legacy alongside other icons such as Babe Ruth and Roger Maris. And A-Rod himself has a stellar record. He’s eighth in franchise history for fWAR and sixth in home runs. So, what could be the possible reason that he is not there yet?

What’s your perspective on:

Does A-Rod deserve a spot in Monument Park, or is his legacy too controversial for the Yankees?

Have an interesting take?

Probably, because things took a detour for him, when he was suspended for performance-enhancing drugs. He even sued Yankees team doctor Christopher Ahmad. Although he later dropped the lawsuit, and in recent times, Rodriguez has been unusually nostalgic about the team. If you take a look at A-Rod’s social media, you will find this isn’t the only post the baseball champ has posted. His recent posts are full of New York Yankees uniforms. However, his teammates may not reciprocate with him. It was seen at the old timers day as well.

What do the former teammates have to say about Alex?

When the ex-captain of the Bronx was asked whether he thinks his former teammate deserves a spot in Monument Park? He took the diplomatic route. Derek Jeter shrugged it off with a casual, “I don’t make those decisions, man.” Given his famously complicated relationship with A-Rod—full of dramatic highs and lows—Jeter knew exactly what the media was after. He even called them out directly: “I know people are looking for headlines.” the 50-year-old was in no mood to be dragged into the fray.

Just like Jeter, the other 2009 Yankees stars, CC Sabathia and Jorge Posada,  kept the response very low-key; Sabathia said, “That’s not up for me,”  And Posada? He went with, “I can’t answer that. I feel like his numbers speak for themselves.” While they’re giving props to A-Rod’s stats, you can’t help but wonder if there’s a tiny bit of unspoken tension lingering around. But who really knows?  A bit different opinion came from  YES Network’s David Cone. Who believed that the 5-year-old veteran needs to be here as he is part of the history. Plus things like Monument Park and the Hall of Fame are meant to document the same. “You just can’t take a brush and make people disappear as if they didn’t exist or they didn’t have that incredible history.”

Cone’s also confident that if fans had their say in an online poll, A-Rod would be a slam dunk for Monument Park. “They would love to see it,” Cone says with a knowing smile, suggesting that the fanbase would back A-Rod big-time. And it’s hard to argue with that. The buzz around A-Rod on social media is electric. Whether he’s sharing his viral Olympic challenge, dropping motivational messages for the youth, or reminiscing about the Yankees’ glory days, his comment sections are flooded with love from fans. So, what do you think? If it were up to the fans, would A-Rod be joining the other Yankees legends in Monument Park? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
