Leaving home for studies or work can be such an overwhelming experience, isn’t it? And the Oakland Athletics are feeling that same weight right now as they prepare to leave their home ground and make a fresh start elsewhere. But one thing they are leaving behind is the fans in Oakland. With so many admirers tied to them over the years, they know it’s important to honor that connection. So, Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher took to the digital stage, posting a heartfelt open letter to fans on Monday.
Posted on Talkinbaseball’s Instagram account, the letter was addressed to “our Oakland Athletics Fans” directly. The letter revealed that management had tried to keep the A’s in Oakland but ultimately failed. This news hit just before their series against the Texas Rangers, marking the end of an era—their final games in the East Bay. As the team prepares to pack up and say goodbye, a wave of sadness sweeps through the city, now left without any major sports teams to rally behind. And while A’s are now all set to make Las Vegas their next home, you can still sense John’s heartache in the post.

The Athletics have been woven into the fabric of Oakland for an incredible 57 years! When John Fisher teamed up with Lew Wolff to bring the team into a new era, they were bursting with dreams—dreams of world championships and a brand-new ballpark right in Oakland. And how could they not have hope? The A’s made their mark with four World Series championships and a whopping 17 division titles! Reflecting on that journey, John said, “Over the next 18 years, we did our very best to make that happen.”
The A’s put in countless efforts to secure their future in Oakland; whether it was fruitful, that’s another thing. But the team even proposed and pursued five different locations in the Bay Area. In the statement, they mentioned that “from heart- we tried our best.” But as John Fisher revealed in the letter, despite mutual and ongoing efforts to finalize the Howard Terminal project, they ultimately came up short. Ultimately, after 16 years of finding a home in East Bay in 2021, the reality hit: they faced a binding MLB agreement to secure a new one by 2024.

Which they did, and now the A’s are heading to Las Vegas as their new home! However, they won’t be playing there until 2028 while they wait for a stadium to be built. In the meantime, the team will start playing at Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park starting next year. It’s like the end of one chapter and the beginning of another—definitely a tough transition for the team, the city, and most importantly, the loyal fans!
The fans have been disheartened for a while now!
Who has been vocal about their feelings for quite a while now, especially since the announcement of the A’s temporary home in Sacramento last April? Frustration has bubbled over, with many feeling that John’s time as owner hasn’t quite hit the mark. There’s a sense of speculation that he isn’t investing in the team as he should be, leaving some loyal supporters feeling disheartened. But despite all that, the Coliseum was alive this past Saturday and Sunday.
As thousands of fans gathered to witness the A’s face off against the New York Yankees in what are among the team’s final games, the atmosphere was charged with emotion. Fans haven’t held back their frustrations, making it clear they blame John Fisher for the plans to relocate the team after a temporary stint in Sacramento. All season long, they’ve been hanging banners and donning T-shirts with the slogan “Sell the Team”—or, in some cases, simply “SELL.” And who can blame them?
The A’s have a rich legacy in Oakland. Even though they’ve called different cities home, such as Philadelphia and Kansas City, the era of more than 5 decades in the East Bay has been the best for the Athletics. Especially their dominance in the 70s was top-tier. But now, it’s time for the A’s to leave all that behind and start fresh! Will Las Vegas be the home that fulfills John’s dreams, or should they have found a way to stick to their roots in Oakland? It’s a tough call! What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments.
