It’s Mayday for the most star-studded team in MLB. Yes, we are talking about the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were projected to win 130 games this year. Well, things are not going as planned. They suffered a humiliating 16–0 loss to the Cubs on April 12. This defeat marked the Chicago Cubs‘ largest shutout victory ever against the Dodgers and their highest run total in Dodger Stadium’s history. However, what lies ahead for the Dodgers? A lot of gut punches. Could they make a comeback from here? At least, Mookie Betts and Dave Roberts think so.
The series against the Cubs began on Friday, April 11, with the Dodgers winning 3-0, but the Cubs dominated the next two games, winning 16-0 on Saturday and 4-2 on Sunday. Expectedly, panic is growing among the fans. Why not? This is the team’s longest losing streak since 2019. The Dodgers manager, Dave Roberts though asked the fans for patience.
“Hey, they should have got on us. We got our b—- kicked, so they had every right to get on us last night.” Acknowledging the right of the fans to get upset over the Dodgers’ humiliating loss, Roberts is asking for some more time. “I do think it’s too early to panic. We still have a good ball club. We’re going to be just fine. I still expect to win the division. I still expect to win the World Series.” Well, in a 162-game season, 3 series losses shouldn’t make much noise. However, when the team is the Dodgers, who were poised to be unbeatable, noise is expected.

Q: Some fans are panicking, is that crazy to you?
Dave Roberts: "I don't want to call anyone crazy — you can. I do think it's too early to panic. We still got a good ball club. Yesterday was ugly. Certainly never want Miggy Ro to throw two innings of a baseball game. We're going…

Joining Roberts, the Dodgers’ star shortstop Betts also sounds confident about their comeback amid his slump. Yesterday, the shortstop went to the plate three times. A solitary rocket to center field was the only hit he managed to get out. Rest, it’s all dry. This kind of outing mirrors the broader struggle for the Dodgers — even when their stars like Betts connect, it’s not leading to much momentum. That third-inning single just got stranded, like so many base runners this series.
“I think it’s just a bumpy two weeks. We have a long time, we have a long season to go, and a lot can happen. This isn’t the first time we sucked for two weeks, it just happens that it’s right now. If we panic, things get worse. If we don’t panic, it looks like we don’t care. So what are we supposed to do?” said Betts.
So, when the star shortstop and manager sound confident, should the fans bet on them? Probably, considering the Dodgers’ history of turning the tide. Remember their poetic comeback in 2018? The Dodgers began 2018 with a 16–26 record, their worst start in decades. However, the team rallied to win the NL West and reached the World Series. But until they start bringing results, the poor show of the team’s offense will remain a concern.
Dodgers’ offense poised to take charge
Well, it is not only about Betts, who is struggling at the plate. At the plate, Shohei Ohtani is also facing a dip in his performance with a 0-for-5. The story doesn’t end here. On four tries, Teoscar Hernandez was also unsuccessful. Max Muncy launched a sacrifice fly to right field for the RBI after going 0-for-2. The lone warriors were Will Smith and Michael Conforto, who emerged as the only Dodgers to hit two hits. When the opposition limits the Dodgers to two runs or fewer, Betts and the team are now 0–4 overall.

Ahh — that stat line tells a pretty rough story. The Dodgers’ top guns just couldn’t get it going, and when the offense stalls like that, even the few bright spots can’t spark a rally. Moreover, for a team like the Dodgers, this kind of stat sheet is brutal, especially when the core hitters all go ice-cold at once. This year, Betts, Ohtani, and Teoscar are supposed to be the heartbeat—so when they’re off, it shows fast. The pitching, on the other hand, is working as per their expectations, with the starting rotation throwing some good fireballs.

That said, it’s early. Teams have these stretches, and the Dodgers have bounced back before. Do you think this is just a slump, or are there deeper cracks showing?
