“We Got Lucky”: Derek Jeter Narrowly Escaped Trouble Which Occurred at a Party Jennifer Lopez Attended Soon After His Famous World Series Win

With popularity comes an unfathomable amount of public scrutiny. And if you’re Derek Jeter, roaming the streets of New York, the flow of events could take an ugly turn at any point. Something very similar happened in December 1999, but to the future Yankees captain’s good luck, he chose to sleep and rest over a night of partying at Club New York.

Dated back in December 1999, pop sensation Jennifer Lopez was in a relationship with record producer and rapper Sean Combs, popularly known as Puff Daddy. A few nights before New Year’s eve, Puff dropped a message to Mike Evans, Captain Clutch’s close friend, inviting Derek Jeter and him to Club New York for a party. But crediting an argument at the club, things turned ugly for Puff, who eventually found himself in cuffs.

A narrow and potentially life-threatening escape for Derek Jeter

In Derek Jeter’s ESPN documentary called ‘The Captain’, Evans narrated the text message Puff sent him: “Me and JLo are going to be here tonight. This is where we’re going: Club New York. He said, ‘bring Derek here tonight.'”

However, after pitching the idea to Derek Jeter, the shortstop refused, and said, “You know what man, I’m going to bed. I got a game tomorrow.” The party, on the other hand, turned chaotic once Puff fired his weapon and got arrested for the criminal possession of a weapon.

Naturally, if Derek Jeter was present at the scene of the crime, the event would’ve become even bigger than it already was. While talking about that in the documentary, the five-time World Series Champion said, “We got lucky. My name would’ve been a part of this story.”
