There has been some heavy drama in the market this MLB offseason. Many of the well-known players are shifting teams, and some players are making moves that were not expected. While the Dodgers swept the entire market to build their super team, other teams were left with very few game-changing players. One such player is Pete Alonso. Pete Alonso has been a superstar from the time of his debut in 2019. But now with his contract up in the air, there is some big news coming in.

The New York Mets might not resign Pete Alonso. This might come as a surprise for many and as they thought Pete Alonso would surely sign again with the Mets again. But after the big signing of Juan Soto a few days before, this is looking highly unlikely. And to add to this, Steve Cohen, the owner of the New York Mets has given some big news. This news will lead to many teams jumping into the market to grab Pete Alonso.

While at a press meet, fans started chanting “We want Pete, we want Pete”. This led to Cohen interrupting the fans and speaking about this situation. He said, “We’ve made a significant offer to Pete. And you know, what Davis said is correct. He’s entitled to go out and explore his market. And that’s what he’s doing.” meaning that there is a very high chance that the New York Mets will not be resigning Alonso.

He also compared this to the situation of signing Juan Soto and said, “I mean, Soto was tough. This is worse. OK?” meaning that they have been at this for a very long time it is getting very tough for both parties to reach an agreement.  The owner also said, “We’re going to have to get used to the fact that, you know, we may have to go forward with the existing players,” hinting that they will not wait for Pete Alonso and will be moving forward without him.

Swinging for the Future: How the Free Agent Market Shapes MLB’s Game Plan

The 2025 MLB free agent market has dramatically altered team strategies with huge signings and unexpected negotiations. Among the many deals, the New York Mets acquired a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract with outfielder Juan Soto to highlight their commitment to long-term success. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed left-hander Blake Snell for five years, $182 million, in order to continue its competitive run.

What’s your perspective on:

Can the Mets thrive without Pete Alonso, or is this the beginning of a downfall?

Not all free agents have found the market favorable. Pitcher Jack Flaherty, who had a great 2024 season with a 13-7 record and a 3.17 ERA, expressed confusion at the lack of interest from MLB teams. He attributed this to organizations prioritizing playoff appearances over championship pursuits. Flaherty’s situation shows the uncertainty of free agency, where even proven talent can be uncertain.

Teams are also preparing for potential departures of key players. New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has already made public declarations that he could potentially move on from star first baseman Pete Alonso due to contract negotiations that were drawn out and arduous. This approach reflects a wider trend in the way franchises weigh star power with financial flexibility and planning for the future.
