The much-awaited debut of Dylan Crews for the Washington Nationals has enticed baseball fans. The 22-year-old outfielder was called to play for his first game in MLB against the New York Yankees at Nationals Park. And he earned that by hitting .270 with 13 homers, 68 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases across Double-A and Triple-A this year. Although Crews had a rather underwhelming night on Monday, and they lost the game, the game itself was a milestone event for the debutant.
Just ahead of the game, he had to break possibly one of the biggest news of his life to his mom and he did so in the most heartwarming fashion. The Nationals thankfully captured this very important moment and have now even posted it on social, with everyone going “aww”! Selected to debut in MLB, of course, Dylan Crew called up his mom and asked if she was free for the next few days. Then, he clarified, “You got to come watch me play at Nationals against Yankees on Monday.” His mom’s ecstatic response? “Oh my God, honey!” followed by an overjoyed “Woo hoo!” that lit up Dylan’s face!

Dylan Crews is one of the most talented rookies and most talked about too. He was selected No. 2 overall by the Nationals in the 2023 MLB draft. He then went on to spend his first-ever season with the team and then, made his way to the minor leagues. After just one game in the Florida Complex League, Crews quickly made his way up the ranks, playing for the Fredericksburg Nationals, Harrisburg Senators, and Rochester Red Wings. Prior to all that, he was exceptional at LSU, winning the 2023 Golden Spikes Award.
When Dylan stepped into the game against the New York Yankees on Monday, he even got a roaring ovation from the crowd. However, things didn’t turn in his team’s favor that day. The Nationals had come into the game sitting in fourth place in the NL East; they had a 59-72 record, but they were slagging behind after Gleyber Torres launched a home run in the first inning. Then, despite the home runs from Juan Yepez and Young, the gap that the Yankees made was too much for them to close. But while it was a disappointing day for the team, this game will be etched into Dylan Crews’ memory for his entire life.

When Dylan was asked in July if he was awaiting that call from the franchise, he told the Washington Post that he was in no hurry. He said, “There’s no pressure to it. Whenever my time is, my time is. That’s not my decision. I just have to keep doing what I’ve got to do, and that is where my feet are every day and do what I have to do that day to be at a high level.”

Well, finally, that time arrived, and he was more than ecstatic to play. In his first at-bat, he faced one of the top teams of the season- the New York Yankees’ Nestor Cortes, and then, he hit a fly toward the tight field. Unfortunately, Juan Soto caught it, so Dylan Crews finished his debut with a disappointing 0-for-3, a walk, and a strikeout. After the game, he spoke to the media and while he seemed disappointed; he seemed more than enthusiastic about coming back and ace it out next time.
Dylan Crews commented, “Was an awesome feeling to go out there for the first time and compete with the guys. Obviously, we didn’t end up winning today, but tomorrow we’re going to come out swinging.” The team has plenty of hopes with Dylan Crew; he is a crucial part of the Washington Nationals rebuilding their roster, which they have been working on for quite a hot minute, since 2021. He has a stellar record at the college level, and the minor league too, so the team will be expecting more.
