Hawk Tuah's first pitch: A touching moment or just another PR stunt? What's your take?

How quickly can one’s life change? Just a few months ago Haley Wetch was an unknown name. But then one moment later she became the “Hawk Tuah” girl and a social media sensation. From concerts to different sports avenues, Wetch is quickly turning into a pop culture zeitgeist. So is it a surprise that a baseball team has decided to take advantage of Haley Wetch’s fame? That’s exactly what the New York Mets did before their game against the Oakland Athletics.

The 22-year-old Tennesse native has become a big part of pop culture. That was visible on July 15 when the crowd cheered her on while the “Hawk Tuah” girl Haley Wetch took on the mound. Accompanied by her friend, Wetch followed up her first pitch with a chest bump with her friend. All the while the crowd continued to cheer her on. Though, this didn’t sit well with the traditional baseball fans.

Social media was abuzz with comments like “Lowest point of the Mets” and other such words. The reason was quite simple. Though, Wetch became a sensation with her “Hawk Tuah” comment, the context in which she said it found a mixed reaction. She first became popular when Tim and Dee TV interviewed her during a night out in the streets. That was when her irreverent answer to a sexual question became a huge meme. So how did it affect Wetch’s life?

Last month, the “Hawk Tuah” girl received $30K to make an appearance in the iconic Memory Motel’s New York pop-up. Such has been her fame that Haley Wetch quit her spring factory job last month to travel around the country. But while this was her first time pitching in a baseball game, this was certainly not the first time the sport has referred to her.

Out of all baseball stars, one can expect Bryce Harper to be the one to do something outrageously funny. The Philadelphia Phillies star has always been the one to put the fun at the forefront. From his various jokes to adorable moments, Harper’s sense of humor often comes off as unhinged and free from inhibitions. This was visible again 2 months ago when he decided to give some attention to the “Hawk Tuah” movement.

After getting a hit against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Bryce Harper paid homage to the “Hawk Tuah” girl. Of course, he did it by actually doing the “Hawk Tuah” move. That video immediately went viral all over the baseball world. However, at that time it was seen as a tongue-in-cheek moment by Harper. Few, if any, expected Haley Wetch to actually get a chance to throw the first pitch.

But the New York Mets made it possible. Still, despite being a good marketing exercise, the Mets fans are a little embarrassed as seen by the reactions. So was it a smart move by the New York Mets? Or did they go too far in chasing trends? Let us know in the comments.
