As the MLB season moves toward the second half, it’s getting more competitive. With a lot at stake, every team wants to take advantage of every opportunity to establish their position at the table. And when things don’t go well, the temperature on the field rises. The baseball world saw similar scenes when the Washington Nationals and the Arizona Diamondbacks met on Thursday. The Nationals Manager, Dave Martinez, faced an ejection for his heated argument with umpires. 

Martinez has been under pressure because of the poor 2023 as Washington Nationals sit last in the NL East. Having won their previous game, he wanted to continue the winning run, but things went differently than planned. Resulting in Martinez’s frustration, who showed it on the plate before his ejection.

Umpiring is the conflicting part of the sport which is put under scrutiny by everyone. It was also the case during the Nationals game against the D-Backs. During the fifth innings of the game, when the Nationals were batting, Umpire Doug Eddings called a low ball a strike when Jake Irvin was at bat. Deeming it a wrong decision, Martinez argued with the umpire.

Like the MLB history lauds, the umpire did not like the reaction from Martinez and eventually ejected him from the game. Moreover, this did not benefit the team either. They lost the game, making it their 14th loss in their last 17 games. Though, the reaction was loved by the players, who backed their manager.

Even though things did not go as planned for the Nationals, players have backed their skipper. While conversing with the media, Jake Irvin, who was party to the entire episode, praised Martinez. According to MLB.com, Irvin shared, “Here’s our leader, man. When a guy comes out and battles for us like that, it’s motivational. We see it, see how much he cares, and we are going to keep working hard, that’s for sure.” 

The entire team seems to be in sync regarding this episode and would look to turn this into energy for a better return in the future. Will they be able to do it? Only time will tell!
