The Los Angeles Dodgers just traded in the latest pitching addition to their lineup, Tyler Glasnow. From the details of the MLB deal that have been revealed so far, Glasnow’s contract went for a hefty price of $136.5 million. However, considering the ace’s previous stints with injuries, the decision might not have been a wise one on the team’s front. Or was it?

Glasnow had his best season this year, posting an ERA of 3.53 with a 1.083 WHIP. That certainly solidifies the Dodgers’ decision to add another well-rounded pitcher to their roster. Given that both the team and the ace were willing to join hands, how likely is it for the trade to work out for them in the long run?

In a recent Twitter video, Tyler Glasnow was seen revealing that the majority of the injuries in his past were UCL injuries. It wasn’t until his 2021 surgery that it was revealed that the UCL had been hanging off the bone since 2019. That makes his 5-year promise to the Dodgers look like quite an uncertain one, doesn’t it?

For the recent $136.5 million trade that went through, adding the Boys in Blue to his choice of teams wasn’t even a question. “It was about going to a team I’m gonna be happy with,” Tyler Glasnow said while discussing his recovery after the latest Tommy John surgery. Speaking of surgeries, the player has been consistently facing injuries this season.

That certainly calls for doubt over the Dodgers’ decision to lock down the player for the coming five years for about $30 million a year from 2025 onward. But Tyler Glasnow’s history of staying true to his game speaks of a different future.

Resilient when it matters the most

The first time Tyler Glasnow faced an injury was back in 2019 when he got a strain on his right forearm. Though that made him miss the majority of the season, he still managed to strike out 76 times, and that too in only 60.2 innings pitched. This year, he faced the highest number of injuries (albeit insignificant ones) in a single season—an oblique strain and quad cramps—and still managed to strike out 162 times across 120 innings pitched.

Glasnow has had a full chance to recover since the surgery happened back in 2021. Considering that the 2023 season marked his official and full comeback, it doesn’t need to be emphasized that the Dodgers made the right choice by getting him on their roster. The ace certainly has what it takes to overcome all hurdles when it comes to his health. Here’s wishing him the best of luck for his newest venture with the Boys in Blue!
