Pitching has been a focal point of the New York Yankees’ off-season in recent weeks. This includes both the starting rotation and the bullpen. The Yankees have been linked to several top hurlers, with an emphasis on bullpen recently. But now the team faces a major setback as their former reliever signs with another team.

It has been a well thought out off-season thus far by the Bronx Bombers. Trading for Juan Soto, outfield depth, and signing Marcus Stroman are all decent moves. But now, as the Yankees eye bullpen depth, one of their top relief hurlers has signed with the San Diego Padres.

Recent links showed that the New York Yankees are interested in adding bullpen arms. Former pinstripes Keynan Middleton and Wandy Peralta seemed to be the favorites. But now, Peralta has signed a 4-year pact with the Padres according to MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal. Furthermore, the initial reports state it is worth $16.5 million.

In an X post, Rosenthal said, “Free-agent left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta in agreement with Padres on four-year, $16.5M contract with three opt-outs, sources tells me and @dennistlin. Deal is pending a physical.”

This is a massive loss for the Bombers, as Peralta was a reliable bullpen presence. During his time in New York, he stood out as a top pitcher and also a great locker room guy. Yankees skipper Aaron Boone has high praise for the lefty pitcher.

Furthermore, it is a great addition for the Padres, who add a great relief pitcher. Peralta’s return to the Bronx was gaining some steam in recent days. But the San Diego-based team has won the race. Now, the Bombers are faced with a tough choice.

The Yankees have to pivot

With Wandy Peralta off the board, the New York Yankees have one less top bullpen free agent to choose from. Furthermore, the team has to quickly pivot and sign their best available option before any other pitchers are picked up. At the moment, former Bomber Keynan Middleton seems to be a top candidate.
