Nothing’s been going well between the Toronto Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the moment. The reason? The Blue Jays’ first baseman didn’t reach a contract for his extension before the 2025 MLB season. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is in the last year of his contract, and he will receive $28.5 million before becoming a free agent.
While there are speculations of him signing a $500 million-plus contract with an AL East team, an insider report claims it to be untrue. What is it then?
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has expressed his willingness to stay with the Blue Jays for a long time. But given that neither the club nor he agreed, they are currently at a crossroads. Such uncertainties have given rise to trade rumors of him joining the New York Mets. Is that possible?

Maybe! Nothing is official yet because Vladimir Jr. is being pursued by other teams as well, such as the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, and even the Seattle Mariners. However, the New York Mets seem to be the major contender. Now, during the Mets-Blue Jays game on Saturday, Guerrero Jr. was found having a funny conversation with Juan Soto and other players, prompting a Mets insider to say that he’s been begging to become a Met.
However, top MLB insider and baseball analyst Jon Heyman disagreed with the statement, saying, “That is assuredly not what’s happening here. He has consistently said he wants to stay a Jay. Beyond that, the Jays absolutely need to keep him.”

And it’s true! Jon Heyman believes that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been part of the Mets’ core for quite some time. He even had a good 2024 season, where he had 616 AB, scoring 98 runs, 30 home runs, and 103 RBIs while batting at a .323 average, .396 OBP, and .940 OPS. Even Vladdy Jr. has often been found to express his sentiments, citing, “I love to stay here my entire career.” It clearly indicates his love for the team. As for the Blue Jays, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is one of the reasons why they have won the majority of their games. The fact that even President Mark Shapiro views him as a “true legacy player” shows how eager he is to complete the contract extension as quickly as possible.
However, the Toronto Blue Jays haven’t yet extended his contract, although they may place a new offer on the table during the offseason. And if the team makes its way into the playoffs, they may even retain him. Meanwhile, Vladimir Jr. has his say on the rumors surrounding him.

He has faith in his agent and thinks he will be the first to know about any developments.
