Angel Hernandez is one of the most controversial umpires in baseball. He has come under scrutiny for his decisions on numerous occasions. The baseball community has criticized Hernandez all throughout his career. Consequently, he hasn’t got a chance to umpire a World Series game since 2005.?
Hernandez yet again stirred controversy on Sunday, when he made a mistake. The decision went against the Mets’ team, and the players and manager got visibly annoyed.?
Angel Hernandez and another umpiring error?
Angel Hernandez and umpiring mistakes have a lifelong alliance. Sunday’s game between the Mets and Marlins was no exception. The Mets were batting at the top of the first inning. Brandon Nimmo hit the ball to the left-center gap. The ball rolled towards the wall and stopped under the wall padding.
So the batter and base runners set off running. For context, if a ball gets stuck in the wall padding, then as per baseball rules, the fielders must hold up their arms. The sign towards the umpires signifies an ‘out of play.’ Neither of the Marlins fielders did that, however. While JJ Bleday picked up the ball, Jerar Encarnacion pointed towards the third baseman.?
Perceiving Encarnacion’s signal to be something else, Hernandez ruled the play dead, as in a ground-rule double. Mets manager Buck Showalter came out fuming in response to Hernandez’s misjudgment. The Mets players and even the commentators got baffled.?
The avoidable mishap went on as follows:?

Slamming the umpire straight up:?
Dude can’t make the right calls a foot in front of his face. What makes him think he can make them 400 feet away?

Joining in the angry brigade, someone said:?
I’m 99% convinced Angel Hernandez wakes up in the morning and says how am I going to annoy and piss over every player, manger, and fan today.

Taking a sly dig at the umpire:?
Classic Angel Hernandez moment

A few more reactions:?
Ok, my question is if Hernandez wasn't the crew chief why didn't the crew chief override?
And ultimately I get it because once ol' Angel waved his hands the play was effectively dead, but still. SOMEBODY has to tell him to stay in his lane and that wasn't his call.

If that’s the case, the OF is supposed to stop, raise his hands, and the umpire will come check to see if it’s actually wedged.
All the while, the runners can keep moving. If the umpire deems the ball is wedged, then the ump will put runners where they need to be.@5Umpires??

And finally, some rare support for Hernandez:?
Dude made the correct call. The fielder playing the ball doesn’t change that it was lodged.
