The New York Mets are on a five-game losing streak. While the recent stats may be a little problematic, star first baseman Pete Alonso has achieved quite a few accomplishments this season. Currently leading the MLB home run chart, Alonso gave a stellar performance at a recent game vs. the Atlanta Braves. While the Mets may have lost Tuesday’s match-up, Braves fans realized how much damage Alonso could do and greeted him with boos on Wednesday.

In fact, they felt so threatened by the 28-year-old that some fans actually cheered when Alonso suffered an injury. However minor, Alonso had to exit and his team lost yet again.

The Mets and the Braves are division rivals and there is an even fiercer rivalry between the two teams’ fans. Much like the Yankees vs Red Sox, the NL East teams’ feud was at its highest in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Some fans, however, clearly remember the old days and booed Alonso.

But right in the first inning, the Braves Charlie Morton accidentally hit Alonso on his left wrist with a 96.5-mph fastball. The Mets player immediately collapsed to the ground, in pain. Morton’s move was clearly unintentional as he crouched on the ground, watching Alonso.

The Mets player received medical attention and it was later reported that the X-rays came back negative, so he will be day-to-day. Ever the sportsman, however, Alonso made sure to clear the air regarding Morton as the incident sparked fan debate on whether the move was intentional.

Alonso made it clear that Charlie Morton was not at fault

In a post-game interview with SNYtv, Alonso revealed that Morton came up to him after his X-rays to apologize for the situation. “Charlie, or Chuckie, came up after I got X-rayed, he was looking for me. I’d just got out of the X-Ray. He just wanted to apologize, obviously, he didn’t mean to [hit Alonso],” he told reporters.

“So for people speculating, I just want to clear that – A) Chuckie’s a good guy. B) I mean, the situation didn’t call for it either…if anyone were to ask anything or speculate anything, there’s nothing to it. I just happened to get hit with a fastball.”
