While Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, and Juan Soto were names in ESPN’s prestigious Elite 100 party, a surprise New York Yankees’ name snuck onto the list. This young player has been on the radar for a while now and has truly impressed folks in the big leagues. Tucked in at number 95, the young shortstop stands out, primarily for 2 reasons. His talent and his story.

This shortstop’s 2023 rookie season was a tale of two halves. Speaking offensively, he struggled and struck out frequently. But amidst the offensive woes, he shone brightly. One interesting aspect of this Yankees underdog is that he impressively followed Jeter’s footsteps by winning a Gold Glove Award at the crucial shortstop position. Any guess who this is?

Anthony Volpe‘s defensive prowess is undeniable. He flaunts a Gold Glove at the age of 22 years old. Apart from showcasing instincts, he showcases the range that has scouts raving. It is this defensive foundation that gives him a high floor. There is more than one reason to believe that he is a valuable asset on the field.

Even if his bat doesn’t quite erupt (with a low batting average (.209)) his prowess is evident. There’s evidence to back that up. Volpe became the first Yankee ever to swipe 20 bases and propel 20 home runs in one season. Now that’s quite a feat to achieve so early in ones career.

What makes this even special is that such a feat has not been seen in the Bronx since Derek Jeter’s rookie year. Not to mention, he hit 21 home runs and stole 24 bases. The abilities of this nascent is certainly unquestionable and 2024 perhaps will be his chance. While it’s likely that he will put it all together this year, one must know that it’s not all a bed of roses for Volpe.
