After eight years of keeping the position empty, the New York Yankees appointed the AL home run king, Aaron Judge as their next captain. Notably, this position was vacant ever since Hall of Famer Derek Jeter retired from the game in 2014. The former captain dutifully passed on the torch to the captain of a new generation with some words of wisdom.
Derek Jeter, because of his immense leadership skills on and off the field, garnered love and respect from millions of New Yorkers throughout his career spanning over two decades. Even though it’s been over eight years since Jeter stopped playing the game, he is still a fan favorite in New York. Now, a 21-year-old prospect, Anthony Volpe, revealed how the reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge is the perfect successor of his baseball idol, Derek Jeter.

Having grown up as a Yankees fan, Volpe only had one player that he looked after the most, Derek Jeter. The young prospect watched the Yankees world series game in 2009 when he saw Jeter helping his team win their 27th trophy. Since then, he has only heard highly about the former captain from players who got called to the big league. And now, looking at the fantastic career that All Rise has had until now, he does not think anybody else other than Judge can handle the captain’s job well.
While being in spring training with the big league players, Volpe, in an interview, spoke, “I grew up loving and idolizing Derek Jeter. Being able to watch and see how my teammates who have gotten called up speak of him, I don’t think there’s a better representation of carrying on the torch than Judge.”

After watching the offseason, one can safely say that Aaron Judge re-signing with the Yanks and becoming captain is one of the highlights of this entertaining offseason.
Baseball fans agree with the young Vople
New York Yankees’ fanbase is by far one of the biggest in the entire big league. They can be cruel but also never miss out on an opportunity to appreciate their players.
Following are some of the reactions of fans towards Volpe’s confession.
Can’t wait until he actually puts on pinstripes so Yankee fans can quickly turn on him when he struggles like they do every young player who isn’t actually Derek Jeter

Not like @Yankees fans putting much pressure on the kid. Jeter was a great leader on and off the field, yet an average INF. If he played for the Royals, he wouldn’t have been idolized as he was in NYC.

If his defence is as bad as Jeter’s this should be awesome! https://t.co/q7OCXj9E7K
