In the unpredictable world of baseball, chaos doesn’t knock—it kicks the door down. Just when it seemed like the Cincinnati Reds had found some stability, reality came flying in like a wild pitch. As they square off against the Colorado Rockies, a fresh face is being thrown straight into the fire, while a $1.3 million arm finds itself shelved, proving once again: baseball spares no one.
Today is not a good day for Cincinnati Reds fans. First one of their legends, Walt Jocketty, passed away and now the news of an injury.
It was reported that the Reds’ Twitter handle put up a post saying that their pitcher Ian Gibaut is on the IL. The post said, “The #Reds today recalled from Triple-A Louisville RHP Lyon Richardson and placed on the 15-day injured list RHP Ian Gibaut (right shoulder impingement).”

Gibaut has been a dependable arm in the Reds’ bullpen, often called upon in crucial situations. He had a good 2023 season, but his 2024 season was marred by injuries. He suffered a strained forearm and underwent anterior interosseous nerve release surgery in May. After the return, he was placed on the 15-day IL with a shoulder impingement.

Before landing on the IL again, Gibaut had put together a mixed start to the 2025 season — a 4.22 ERA with 11 strikeouts across multiple appearances. He struggled early, but settled into a more reliable rhythm before the shoulder issue popped up. His replacement, Lyon Richardson, does have some MLB experience, but will he be able to cover the hole left by Gibaut is the question.
In a season already balancing on a tightrope, the Reds now turn to Lyon Richardson and a fistful of prayers. With Gibaut’s shoulder on ice and Richardson tossed into the flames, Cincinnati fans will need to buckle up — because hope, much like fastballs, tends to sail high and wild when you need it most. Welcome to the show, Lyon. Try not to blink.

Is Lyon Richardson the key to the Reds’ unlocking bullpen potential?
When stability in the bullpen feels like chasing a mirage, desperate times call for bold moves — or at least hopeful ones. With Ian Gibaut sidelined once again, the Reds have thrown Lyon Richardson into the deep end, armed with a live fastball and a résumé still being written. Whether it’s brilliance or pure chaos that follows, one thing’s clear: The Cincinnati Reds aren’t easing into the future — it’s cannonballing in.
Lyon Richardson has not played many games since the start of 2024. Richardson made 5 appearances, recording a 9.35 ERA over 17.1 innings with 13 strikeouts. After going into the minors, his fastball velocity is back in the 97-98 mph mark compared to 93.6 mph of Gibaut. He also has a good arsenal of pitches with a curveball, slider, and change-up.
In 2023, Richardson posted a 1.86 ERA with a 35.2% strikeout rate over 58 innings across three minor league levels. With this much in his backpack, Richardson will be able to fill in the gap left by Gibaut, but without much MLB exposure, will he be able to handle the pressure? We will have to wait and see.

For now, the Reds have swapped experience for electricity, betting that pure heat can outshine polished nerves. Richardson has the tools, but tools don’t build houses — carpenters do. If he can harness the chaos and throw more strikes than prayers, Cincinnati might just stumble into a bullpen revelation. Otherwise, get ready for another chapter in the Reds’ favorite saga: “Hope, Hype, and Heartburn.”
