Spring Training’s energy fills the air, but a dozen major stars still wait for their shot. Why hasn’t a pitcher of Blake Snell’s caliber been snatched up? Should former MVP Cody Bellinger still be a free agent? These aren’t isolated cases; there’s a standoff brewing in the front offices of Major League Baseball, and Rob Manfred has been taking notes.
Commissioner Manfred thinks a signing deadline would fix the off-season lull. Legendary agent Scott Boras calls that a death blow to player rights. Which side is right? Will a hard deadline create a fan frenzy, or will it crush players scrambling for fair value? The game could be changing before our eyes.

Why would teams pass on proven aces like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery? Why is former MVP Cody Bellinger unsigned alongside Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman? J.D. Martinez and Brandon Woodruff add major power potential, yet they sit out. Other solid sluggers like Tommy Pham and Adam Duvall, the defensive whiz Michael A. Taylor, and experienced closers like Liam Hendriks await offers—so do Gio Urshela and Liam Hendriks. What gives?

"We would prefer to have a free-agent signing period. Ideally in December with a deadline that drove people to make their deals."

In a CBS Sports report, Commissioner Rob Manfred advocates for an offseason free-agent signing deadline. “We would prefer to have a free-agent signing period, ideally probably in December, with a deadline that drove people to make their deals, get things settled. We actually made proposals to that effect, to the MLBPA. They were not warmly received,” he states bluntly. The concept has been floated before, but will it reignite the excitement fans crave?
Superagent Scott Boras, who represents several unsigned stars, vehemently disagrees. “Deadlines are death-lines to the players,” argues Boras. “It’s a death of their right (to free agency). It’s an artificial reason not to get your value.” He believes player rights to seek maximum value are sacred, even if it means waiting past the typical signing period.

Deadlines vs. Player Rights
CBS Sports notes a clear upside: a deadline as proposed by Rob Manfred could potentially drive a wave of early signings, bringing the off-season buzz MLB desires. But at what cost? “Teams cannibalize deadlines,” counters Boras. “Everything they would do would be around the deadline. ‘I’ll wait and get this value at this time, because I have a deadline,’ rather than, ‘What’s the player worth?’”
A deadline could ignite off-season interest but leave players with a daunting gamble. Could teams use it to manipulate deals, knowing players face harsh penalties if unsigned in time?

This power play is complex. Does MLB perhaps need a different strategy altogether—one that respects player rights but also revitalizes the excitement surrounding signings and team-building? Only time will tell what this clash of ideas means for the future of baseball and the 12 free agents whose fate hangs by a thin “will they, won’t they” thread.
