Home/MLB

The Oakland Athletics are relentless. In one of the most moving storylines of baseball, the city of Oakland has turned 2023 into a season of protest. When owner John Fisher announced a move to Las Vegas, fans were horrified. In the coming months, their horror turned to anger and resentment as the announcement kept taking steps to become a reality. Even an A’s pitcher is lashing out now.

Everyone, from Hollywood stars to famous authors to MLB players has protested against the move, but seemingly to no avail. This summer, Fisher signed an agreement with Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo to approve public money for the relocation. It seems like after the 2024 lease is over, the Athletics will likely not call Oakland home after more than half a decade here. Nevertheless, a retiring pitcher is leaving the league with a scathing parting shot at the owner.

T-shirts in the A’s classic green colors, bearing the simple word ‘Sell’, were a popular item with the crowds this year, when Oakland wasn’t protesting by not showing up to the Coliseum. However, there also came a point when security refused to let in fans wearing this particular piece of clothing, displaying just how much it irked John Fisher. Trevor May tried to buy one too, while he played as a reliever for the Athletics, but they sold out too soon.

Yesterday, he announced his retirement from baseball at 34 years old, happily bidding goodbye to a fulfilling baseball career. But he couldn’t leave without parting words for the A’s owner. In a long Twitch stream, he first thanked his family and the organization and then he roasted Fisher.

“Sell the team, dude…Let someone who actually takes pride in the things they own, own something. There are actually people who give a sh*t about the game. Let them do it. Take mommy and daddy’s money somewhere else, dork.”

Notably, Fisher’s parents, Doris and Donald, founded GAP. But instead of going into the family business, John Fisher chose baseball, and this is the result. May also urged the 62-year-old to own up to what he’s doing and acknowledge fan protests. Fisher has been adamant about not selling and has been quiet on the media front too. Clearly, everyone has had enough.

In addition to his long rant at Fisher, the pitcher also talked about his time in MLB. After years with the Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, and the New York Mets, May signed a one-year contract with the Athletics. Although he had an IL stint due to anxiety, 2023 was one of the best of his career.
