Trea Turner has been among some of the most powerful players that Major League Baseball has seen in the last decade or so. Among the fastest runners in baseball, Turner has a contact-hitting ability that is unmatched. Not to mention his famous slides while stealing bases. In short, the 29-year-old is a fan favorite, especially after his heroics in the World Baseball Classic. And when he hit free agency at the end of the last season, fans waited with bated breath to see where he would end up. Many, including former shortstop Alex Rodriguez, were disappointed that it was not with the New York Yankees.

The Pinstripes were one of the top teams Turner was expected to go to. Not only would he get the salary he deserved, but the Yankees were in desperate need of a good shortstop. Turner ultimately signed with the Philadelphia Phillies for $300 million and eleven years, and A-Rod thinks the Bronx Bombers missed out on a big talent in the free market.

The 2022 off-season was a happening time for the Bronx – Aaron Judge, the reigning AL MVP, could leave them to join another team. Plus, they needed a shortstop to support him if he came back and Turner was in a perfect position. But things did not turn out with the shortstop signing a Yankees contract, and A-Rod thinks it was a bad call on the front office’s part.

“You look at a guy like Trea Turner and you wonder, how is a guy like that not wearing pinstripes?” the former shortstop said on The Michael Kay podcast. He went on to say, “Use the resources like George Steinbrenner did, and Hal Steinbrenner did in ’09 to bring that championship title.”

A-Rod says there’s a reason the Yankees are in a severe World Series drought

The retired athlete wants the front office to bring in old-school baseball players that know what they’re doing. “The Yankees- the reason why they’ve only won one championship in the last 24 years is because they’re trying to win by being smarter than you,” A-Rod commented in the podcast.

He went on to say, “The Yankees have 27 championships by just being better. By drafting great people, developing the international market…And I think they have to get back to a little bit of old-school baseball…bring more baseball people in the room to help out Cashman company.”
