The New York Mets had all of MLB stuck with the notion of hiring a certain Brewers’ manager because of his pre-existing relationship with David Stearns, the Mets’ president of baseball operations. It didn’t happen. Fans and analysts have many opinions regarding why the imminent deal fell through. But we all know the actual reason why the Chicago Cubs arrived at the last moment and won the Counsell game.

The Cubs hired the Mets’ almost-manager Craig Counsell for an unbelievable deal of $40 million for five years. Even their billionaire owner, Steve Cohen, was not expected to offer Counsell that much. Now that Counsell is out of the picture, the New York Mets were expected to hire someone with a huge win rate, like one of their other prospects, Gabe Kapler. Their final choice of a managerial candidate has players, MLB insiders, and other teams questioning whether the team is a little tight with their finances behind the dugout.

Will their new manager prove beneficial for the New York Mets in the long run?

The New York Mets hired Carlos Mendoza this Tuesday. Mendoza reportedly aced his interview with them like a charming TED-talk speaker. However, whether he is all words and no play will be proven by the end of the 2024 season.

Mendoza never saw a World Series win with the Yankees as a coach, and although it was not fully up to him to create a winning team, he did have a $7.1 billion treasure chest to use with players like Judge and Cole, whom he couldn’t use in the big leagues other than their individual performances.

MLB insider Jon Heyman made an intriguing observation regarding the Mendoza hire. He thinks that Mendoza is a spectacular hire, but he doesn’t bring the required assurance of a bright future for the team. In his words, “Let’s face it, he was the bench coach for a team that had a ‘disaster’ of a season in the words of general manager Brian Cashman, a team that didn’t exactly make the most out of its $275 million payroll.”.

The Yankees’ winning rate at the start of this season was 81.2%. It came down to an unbelievably low 0.5% by the end of it. Mendoza might fare well as a rookie manager with more power in his hands to make necessary decisions with the New York Mets’ $2.9 billion lineup. But that’s up for debate for now.

Was the Mendoza hiring a wise decision on the Mets’ side?

The New York Mets hired Mendoza for a $4.5 million three-year deal, with an additional option for year four. Compared to the Cubs’ Counsell hire for a staggering $40 million five-year contract, the Mets got Mendoza in a steal deal. Was the money the only reason to hire Mendoza? Or are they seeing something in him that the rest of the MLB can’t?
