In what seems to be the most interesting turn of this offseason, Juan Soto has been the center of trading rumors despite his evident unavailability. Following their financial rut this season, the San Diego Padres have major financial cuts to make for the next year. They have already been in talks about the Soto trade with the New York Yankees. How likely is it for the deal to go through?
Neither of the teams has revealed their intentions for Juan Soto so far. In the early stages of the possible trade, there’s still a huge distance left for both to cover. Regardless, it is pretty apparent that Soto will be the perfect fit for the Yankees clubhouse. That is the reason why speculations about the deal have resurfaced again.
Is Juan Soto all set to be a Yankee player?

According to the MLB insider and the New York Post columnist Jon Heyman, the differences between the multitudes of offers that the Padres are receiving are too great right now. That might force the Yankees to look elsewhere for other prospects.
https://t.co/cbQX0KT11N. Yankees don’t want to give up King and/or Thorpe and found Padres’ latest ask so excessive they may pause Juan Soto talks — at least for today. (NYY does have a nice stash of other young pitchers so talks probably aren’t dead)

Given the barrage of skills that Soto brings to the field, it seems almost impossible that they find a proper replacement. Soto is currently valued at $33 million a year. It will cost the Yanks around $50 million or up to score a player like Shohei Ohtani to function as the powerful hitter that they need. The only complication in the Padres-Yankees trade is the fact that the former is asking for very pitching-centric compensation.
From the team’s point of view, the Padres are asking for sluggers like Anthony Volpe, Jasson Domínguez, and Drew Thorpe in lieu of Soto. All three were the top prospects last season. Letting any of them go, let alone all three at once, doesn’t seem like a feasible resolution to agree with. The Yanks reportedly made a counteroffer to Soto’s current team, which wasn’t received very well.

What is left to do now for the Yanks is to either let go of Thorpe or Micahel King, another valued prospect of their team, to cope with the offer. Although they might have better players to trade on while keeping their core prospect power intact.
The Padres would be wise to take up an offer if the Yankees choose to put young prospects like Clarke Schmidt and Chase Hampton, or Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez, on the trade. They are not great options when it comes to out-fielding. But the Padres could choose to draft free agents like Cody Bellinger or Jung Hoo Lee to fill in that space.
