Finally, Alex Bregman joined hands with the Boston Red Sox! What seemed like an endless free agency trade going on for a long time, Bregman ended all the speculations by signing with the Red Sox for the next three seasons. MLB insider Paul Hembekides confirmed on February 13 that the Red Sox were doing magic with this signing, which seemed better than the Will Adames deal. Think that makes sense?

Well, before moving on to how the Red Sox have done a great trade, let’s look at how Alex Bregman performed in 2024. Bregman averaged.260, 75 RBIs,.315 OBP, and.768 OPS, and hit 26 home runs playing for the Houston Astros. However, his long-term contract desire didn’t seem much of interest to any other teams, and he remained a free agent.

Alex Bregman’s deal makes more sense than Adames

While the Red Sox managed to land the free-agent All-Star third baseman on a three-year, $120 million deal, the San Francisco Giants signed Will Adames for a seven-year, $182 million deal. Comparing the two deals, Paul Hembekides cited a few reasons the Alex Bregman deal is a better bet than the Adames deal, “You’re buying low on Bregman, who was hitting below 200 as late as May 9th and OPSing below 600 as late as May 27. We remember how slowly he started, and he never really climbed all the way out of it, but for the second reason, Bregman has the old man skills that Will Adames just does not have. His strikeout-to-walk rate, which I believe is one of the most replicable skills in baseball.

Hembekides praised Bregman’s skills that helped him rank in the 95 percentile or even higher. Although he pointed out the 119 strikeouts by Adames, who is younger than Bregman, Hembekides demonstrated some of his high-level performance, which makes him a better bet. However, he also mentioned that signing Adames was costlier, and in 2024, he hit 32 homers, 13 of which were three-run homers, leading to the ranks getting tied at 16th in the majors while pushing him below to 49th rank. In addition to that, his batting approach became predictable too, while Bregman had years of experience, which could bolster the Boston Red Sox’s lineup in a much better way. The Giants, however, don’t look too happy with their signing.

The Giants seem not happy with the $182M deal

While the San Francisco Giants have landed one of the biggest free agents, Willy Adames, for a seven-year, $182 million deal to make a great comeback after a dismal 2024 season, everything doesn’t seem to be in the right place for the Giants. What is the issue then? Well, the first thing is that the Giants have spent huge on someone who didn’t have the greatest season last year, averaging just.251, 112 RBIs, and 610 AB. But that doesn’t end here!

Adames played for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024, where he scored 30 home runs, 21 stolen bases, and posted 3.1 WAR. Although it justifies his talent as a player of his caliber, American Family Field remains a hitter’s favorite; however, Oracle Park, where he is destined to play for the Giants, is more suitable for the pitchers. Due to this, his actual power might get ruined, resulting in him not putting in the same numbers that he used to have when playing for the Brewers last year.
