ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball featuring the New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants, took a strange turn yesterday. While the Mets swept the visiting Giants, the fifth inning saw some bizarre drama that led to a slight game delay. But what later astonished fans even more, was the broadcasters’ reaction to it – or lack thereof.

ESPN’s Kay-Rod Cast is an alternate broadcast that seeks to do away with regular hosting practices. Alex Rodriguez and Michael Kay are usually popular with audiences for their MLB takes. But yesterday’s show with Chris ‘Mad Dog’ Russo irked many as everyone went on to ignore a fan moment.

The fifth inning of the Mets vs. Giants game was mainly happening as a fan fell from the stands onto the warning track at Citi Field. While major networks usually make no effort to record fan moments on the field, this was a genuine accident. The guy seemed to have hurt his nose as he walked with a bloody tissue or a cloth held to it. Within minutes, security had him surrounded.

However, the injured spectator raised his hands in surrender, indicating he meant no harm. Stadium security escorted him out, but in the sixth inning, an ESPN clip showed him back in the stands. There were seemingly no significant injuries, but while the game was stopped for a few minutes, the Kay-Rod Cast paid no attention.

A clip from their broadcast shows Alex Rodriguez in a deep discussion with Chris Russo about how baseball doesn’t receive national attention like the NBA or NFL. Mad Dog dominates the conversation with seemingly no idea what’s happening on the field. The former Yankee occasionally glances at the game but fails to comment.

Michael Kay is silent throughout the exchange, but from the expression on his face, it seems that he’s aware of some disturbance on the field. But much like his counterparts, he remained silent on the issue, which fans did not appreciate.

Baseball fans berate Alex Rodriguez and Michael Kay

While wild fan moments are generally kept out of game coverage, some fans feel a broadcaster should cover an accident like this. After all, ESPN’s Karl Ravech and Eduardo Perez discussed it, so why not Rodriguez and Kay?

Some pointed out that Kay actually seemed interested in what was happening on the field but chose not to comment.

A few were interested in the valid points Rodriguez made about baseball, while some commented how it’s general policy to not discuss such moments on camera.
