Known for his civil rights struggle in the 20th century, the next Mahatma Gandhi chose non-violence to achieve racial justice. The 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner achieved this and gave the motto “What dream do you still March for?” that inspired millions, including MLB legend Derek Jeter, who recently showed up with a heartfelt message.
King Jr.’s goal for equality and freedom changed the country. The start was “March on Washington” in 1963, which completed 60 years as a legacy in 2023. Jeter wrote, “This past Monday was the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington. @amfam and @TIME interviewed today’s fearless dreamers-like Dr. King’s daughter, @BerniceKing. What dream do you still March for?”
It echoes the message of dreaming beyond the limits and syncs with many messages from King Jr., who adored baseball as a Los Angeles Dodgers fan. It includes his famous saying, “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving.”
Though these lines are simple, yet they inspired millions. It Included the 5x World Series champion, who dreamed of being an outstanding baseball player, which he achieved through hard work and dedication. But the road was not simple for him either.
Jeter Continued to Dream Even Experiencing Racial Struggles
Derek Jeter is an inspirational mirror for modern baseball. Fans across teams, leagues, and sports value and consider him an idol. But the start to this point was not good for the ex-Yankees captain.
Being born to parents of different racial backgrounds, Derek encountered discrimination both during his time in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and while playing in the minor leagues in the southern United States. Per ESPN New York’s Ian O’Connor wrote in “The Captain”, Jeter even received a “racially tinged threat” in his mail in 2006.
