Just a handful of days since spring training starts, and the Red Sox are saying they aren’t done yet. So what have they been doing all offseason? This is a question that many fans have been asking now. The team is still in the mix for third baseman, especially free agent Alex Bregman, and trade target Nolan Arenado.

The Boston Red Sox have made neither of these moves yet. The Boston Red Sox are still hesitant to pull the trigger on a potential deal for Nolan Arenado, and it’s not just about the logistics of fitting him into the lineup. The biggest concern is how moving Arenado could push Rafael Devers into a near-full-time designated hitter role, which doesn’t exactly align with the Red Sox’s long-term vision.

The Red Sox are in need of a right-handed bat

NESN uploaded a video on X that shows Craig Breslow providing an update on free agency. In the video, Breslow says, “Right now, I think we’re still pursuing a right-handed bat… and then, the other opportunity that we’ve talked about is adding to the bullpen”, which has garnered a lot of mixed reactions from fans, most of whom had the same query: Why hasn’t it happened yet? While Craig Breslow did not answer that, it doesn’t help the fact that the free agent market closes soon.

The first full-squad session is scheduled for Monday at Fenway South, while Red Sox pitchers and catchers report for their first official workouts on Wednesday. It’s not like the club did not make some big signings this winter. Starter Walker Buehler and veteran reliever Aroldis Chapman were given one-year contracts. But above all was adding left-handed starter Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox for four prospects. Still, according to the Chief Baseball Officer of the Red Sox, they are in need of a right-handed bat.

Fans react to Craig Breslow wanting to add new player

The frustration expressed by fans in the comments reflects a combination of impatience and skepticism towards the pace of the Red Sox‘s offseason moves, particularly in regard to acquiring a right-handed bat and bolstering the bullpen. One commenter suggests that fans have grown weary of hearing about potential moves without seeing actual results. Breslow’s update implies ongoing discussions or pursuits, but to the fans, it sounds like an endless cycle of talk without tangible action.

Another comment reflects the common criticism that the team has had ample time during the offseason to make necessary moves but has not acted decisively. Free agency typically kicks off soon after the season ends, and the expectation is that teams will address their needs well before spring training begins.

Another user underlines the urgency of the situation. Spring training is not just a time for teams to fine-tune their rosters but also a deadline for getting players in shape and ready for the season. The implication here is that the clock is ticking, and significant roster additions should ideally happen before teams report for spring training.

This directly addresses Breslow’s comments about still pursuing a right-handed bat. The sentiment is one of frustration that the team, with all the time afforded by the offseason, has yet to make a concrete move. Fans are wondering why this hasn’t been addressed sooner.

One fan was clearly fed up with the repeated updates and lack of action. The comment emphasizes that words are no longer enough; fans want the team to make moves, not just talk about them. There’s a sense that the ongoing discussion has become redundant, and action is long overdue.

In essence, these comments reflect the frustration that comes from feeling like the team is procrastinating on crucial moves. Fans have been waiting all offseason for these acquisitions, and with spring training underway, there’s growing impatience that the team is running out of time to fill key gaps in the roster. Breslow’s statements, while outlining the team’s intentions, have not quelled the frustration, as the fans are eager to see results.
