According to the league’s official website, Martinez will play a role of an assistant coach. It comes after Hyannis Harbor Hawks, head coach Eric Beattie asked him to join him. On his joining, Beattie said, “Anytime you can bring in a player that has accomplished what all these players are trying to get to, it’s an obvious great situation for them.”
Interestingly, the Cape League is a premier collegiate summer baseball league. They recruit players from NCAA college divisions for the 10-team competition. Martinez also played in the league with the Falmouth Commodores in the 1986 season and described it as a great experience.
Now, as a coach, he will look to perform a different duty. It would be Martinez’s first professional assignment after a break of years. Though it would not be the first time, he has an immense responsibility on his shoulders. He has fulfilled the same during his time with the Yankees.

A stint in which Martinez won it all!
Winning the world series is a dream of many baseball players. But Martinez achieved the same not once but multiple times during his six-year stay at the Pinstripes, starting in 1996. Notably, his first ring came in his debut year for the Yankees, in which he played a significant role, with a contribution of 86 runs at an average of 0.292 and an OPS of 0.830.
He continued to shine and improved the Silver Slugger Award in 1997. The first baseman retired in 2005 with multiple accolades and experience of over 2000 games under his belt. And will now look to impart his knowledge and experience to the young generation in the Cape League.
