The Detroit Tigers have been making headlines with their interest in Alex Bregman. However, reports indicate that a deal may not be close at hand yet. The seasoned third baseman who has been with the Houston Astros for nine years is aiming for a contract surpassing $200 million—a sum that pushes against Detroit’s boundaries. Known for their spending approach, the Tigers seem hesitant to make a commitment in the long run despite their evident desire to strengthen their infield.

Bergman remains a sought-after free agent at the age of 30 due to his combination of power, hitting abilities, and playoff background. In the 2024 season, he managed to hit 26 home runs and drive in 75 runs with a batting average of .260 and an on-base percentage of .315 over 145 games played. Showcasing his consistency as a key player in the lineup. However, the Tigers’ hesitation aligns with their strategy of measured investments, as seen in their recent one-year deal with Gleyber Torres. Torres fills the vacancy at second base, shifting the focus to who will secure third.

Foul Territory recently uploaded a video of an MLB insider, Cody Stavenhagen, on X in which he talked about whether or not Alex Bregman will land in Motown. He said, “The Tigers definitely like Alex Bregman. I think Alex Bregman has some interest in the Tigers. As of last weekend, it seemed like the Tigers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and maybe others were all still very much in the mix.” He further stated, “Rosen Rosenthal said this morning that maybe the Tigers just aren’t willing to spend. I think the Tigers would love to have Alex Bregman, but up to a certain point.” Maybe they aren’t interested in a long-term deal or signing a $200 million contract.

The Tigers’ interest in Bregman is strategic. His addition would solidify third base, where Detroit currently lacks a standout option. Gleyber Torres, recently signed to a one-year deal, will handle second base, pushing the Tigers’ top prospects like Colt Keith to other roles if Bregman signs. However, if Detroit balks at the price tag, internal options like Keith and Matt Vierling could share the workload at third base.

Furthermore, manager A.J. Hinch’s connection to Bregman adds an intriguing layer to the Tigers’ bid. Having worked together during Houston’s championship years, the pair share a successful history that could influence Bregman’s decision. However, Detroit’s willingness to meet his financial expectations remains the key hurdle. The team has displayed a calculated level of assertiveness in its offseason decisions; however, agreeing to such a contract would mean venturing beyond its boundaries of familiarity.

Other teams lurking in Alex Bregman’s pursuit

The Detroit Tigers are still assessing Alex Bregman’s situation as other teams step forward as contenders in his free-agent market competition. The New York Mets are currently ahead in the race due to their approach during the offseason led by David Stearns. They seek to bolster their lineup and infield with an experienced and disciplined hitter like Bregman. The Mets’ financial power to offer long-term deals aligns with Bregman’s $200 million price tag. The Los Angeles Dodgers, known for their ability to mix superstar signings, are also strong contenders.

With Max Muncy’s future role still undefined and their roster already stacked with elite talent, Bregman would provide the Dodgers with both defensive stability and a consistent bat. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners remain dark horse candidates. The Cubs, with their improving roster and strong financial base, could view Bregman as the final piece to solidify their infield. The Mariners, focused on capitalizing on their young core led by Julio Rodríguez, may look to Bregman as a key addition to compete in the AL West.

For now, though, the gap between Bregman’s demands and Detroit’s financial restraint keeps any potential agreement at arm’s length. As free agency unfolds, these teams could present significant competition for his services.
