If the New York Yankees had a book about their franchise, they surely would have a chapter about all the special talents that have donned the Pinstripes. Going back all the way to Babe Ruth, the book would probably run through several greats including the likes of Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, perhaps a mention of star pitcher Roger Clemens may even find its way in. But there is one modern great they could never leave out.
While the baseball draft has never been the perfect system, sometimes, fate works itself out in mysterious ways. The story of a certain kid from New Jersey working his way up to the Major Leagues, found its great climax when he was drafted by the team he grew up supporting all his life.

Albeit through a twist of fate. But it seemed like Derek Jeter was meant for nothing short of the Pinstripes. Author Ian O’ Connor recounts the incident in his book ‘The Captain – The Journey of Derek Jeter‘.
Even though the MLB Icon had been raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, his New Jersey roots came with him. He had grown up a Yankees fan and was desperately hoping with all he could that his major league debut would be in Pinstripes. But the star was just a pick away from the career we know him for today.
On page 47, O’Connor recounts that in the 1992 draft, the Cincinnati Reds held the 5th pick. The New York Yankees held the 6th. Everyone knew of the prospect’s capabilities so when it came to draft night, the die was ready to be cast.
The Reds weren’t concerned with drafting for a position, they simply wanted the best player available. And in a turn of events that can only be described as fateful, they drafted Chad Mottola from the University of Central Florida. Leaving the 6th pick open for the Yankees to swoop in and sign on the emerging Derek Jeter.
Derek Jeter’s reaction to the pick
When the pick was finally revealed the Jeter family was excited beyond measure. Speaking to the Jeters’ reaction upon hearing the news, it was as if the 5x Golden Glove Winner had ‘ willed cosmic forces‘ for it to happen, writes O’Connor. Charles Jeter on the phone was understandably ecstatic. “I’m so proud of you,” Charles shrieked. “New York Yankees. That’s your dream, man!”
Jeter meanwhile had been preparing to go to college instead of the Majors. But a call-up from his boyhood team was not one he could turn down so easily. Speaking to his reaction, O’Connor writes, “I can’t believe it,” Derek shouted. “I just can’t believe it.”

The 14x All-Star had a fine career in Pinstripes. Going on to win 5 World Series to add to the Yankees’ tally and winning Rookie of the Year in his first season on the diamond in the Majors, Jeter was a ready product from day one. And the Yankees fans will definitely reserve a page for the MLB icon in their book of greats.
