Being a catcher presents big obstacles: managing top-notch pitching teams and directing the game from the catcher’s position while assisting young pitchers in intense situations is no easy gig. However, a certain former Astros catcher never expected to face a test as profound and personal as watching his own son choose Alex Bregman over him.

Most baseball kids grow up idolizing their fathers, especially when their dads have played in the big leagues. But sometimes, fandom has a mind of its own. Martin Maldonado, a four-time Gold Glove finalist, veteran catcher, and longtime defensive anchor, recently shared a hilarious moment on Instagram that had baseball fans buzzing. His son Aiden, instead of idolizing his own father—a respected MLB player—decided that Houston Astros ex-third baseman Alex Bregman was the real role model. “He wants to be like Alex Bregman.” he wrote.

Maldonado’s post quickly went viral, with fans piling on to joke about the kid’s “brutal honesty.” Rather than adding any words of his own, Bregman let Maldonado’s post speak for itself. He simply re-shared the story on his Instagram with power emojis, a classy move that only reinforced his ever-growing reputation as a player who inspires the next generation.

Martin Maldonado might not have come out on top against Alex Bregman this time. However, as a catcher in the game, he understands the importance of playing the bigger picture. His prowess in defense leadership qualities and knack for guiding top-notch pitchers in baseball have garnered him admiration within the league. Maybe a standout moment on camera such as throwing out a runner on base or making the pitch call under pressure—could lead his son to think things over. Or perhaps Maldonado needs to step up his home-run game to match Bregman’s offensive flair to shift the narrative back in his favor.

That said, sometimes the heart wants what it wants. If Maldonado’s son remains a die-hard Bregman fan, the veteran catcher might just have to accept defeat and get his son an Alex Bregman jersey for his next birthday. After all, if his son is going to worship another player, at least it’s someone Maldonado trusts and respects. And who knows? Maybe years from now, when his son understands the true art of catching, he’ll realize that Maldonado was the real defensive wizard all along. Until then, Maldonado might just have to settle for being second-favorite in his own home.
