Finally, Alex Bregman found his perfect landing spot with the Boston Red Sox! While this news ended an ocean of speculations surrounding him as a free agent, MLB insider Chandler Rome dropped a bomb about Bregman rejecting the Red Sox much before when he was supposed to be a first-round draft pick. So what may be the reason?
Well, before going into much detail, let’s take a look at Alex Bregman’s performance in 2024: 260 averages, 75 RBIs, .315 OBP,.768 OPS, and 26 home runs with the Houston Astros. Since Bregman became a free agent, he was on the radar of the Red Sox, who wanted to keep a balance in their lineup by adding the right-handed in the left-heavy lineup.
Right after failing to reach a negotiation for an extension of his contract with the Houston Astros, Alex Bregman has agreed to sign a free-agent contract with the Boston Red Sox. While this news ended the speculations surrounding him, on February 13, top MLB insider Chandler Rome said, “The Red Sox drafted Alex Bregman in the 29th round of the 2012 draft, when Bregman’s stock fell after he broke his hand during his senior year in high school.” Sounds like something that we never knew before, isn’t it?

Well, Alex Bregman was supposedly a first-round draft pick at that time; however, he got injured in his hand, which affected his momentum. Rome went on to say about Bregman being drafted in the 29th round by the Red Sox in 2012 when he lost his control over the game and his stocks felt massive, pushing him to go for the LSU to regain his lost momentum. Thus, despite having the chance to be a major pick in the minor league in his early days, Bregman waited for some time, until getting picked by the Astros in the first round of the draft itself in 2015. While his early decision might have been fruitful, one can’t ignore his records after joining the Astros in 2015.
The Red Sox finally gets the deal done with Alex Bregman
There were multiple franchises, including the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, and Detroit Tigers, that speculated for weeks to acquire the All-Star free agent, Alex Bregman. However, all the speculations ended with him signing the deal with the Boston Red Sox. Although the exact amount is not finalized yet, the deal is expected to be three-year, $120 million, with an annual salary of $40 million with opt-out options as well. But that’s not all!

To strengthen the lineup and give the improved pitching staff the support they needed, the Red Sox desperately needed a right-handed batter. However, Bregman had surgery on his right elbow, due to which he had shared his interest in moving to the second base, as cited by his agent, Scott Boras. So given the flexibility, the Boston Red Sox could play him at the second base, as the third base position belonged to one of their ace players, Rafael Devers.
