The New York Yankees’ hitters are currently going through confusing times. They follow up tremendous hitting displays with some highly disappointing ones. It was once again visible against the Baltimore Orioles. While the Bronx Bombers avoided another shut-out (thanks to homers from Juan Soto and Austin Wells) the hitters just couldn’t do anything to get to the home base. But this inability to find runs may have frustrated fans. However, Juan Soto remains firm in his belief in the squad.
Part of the reason for Soto’s belief is that the Yankees are getting on base. The situation isn’t as dire as in 2023 when the team couldn’t hit the ball. This time, the Pinstripes are doing good, their lineup is getting consistent hits, and the issue lies in their clutching abilities. As a result, the Yankees crumble right at the finish line. That’s something that can be solved – Soto’s words too indicate the same.
“We all grinding, we all trying to get some runs in the ball but things aren’t going our way,” Juan Soto said in his postgame interview. “We hitting the ball hard, we hit the ball in the gap. They (the Orioles) made great plays, they diving all over the place. So I think we gave them good at-bats, we contact, we hit the ball hard. They just haven’t landed for us.”

While the situation wasn’t as dire as game 1 where the Yankees went 0-for-8 in an RISP situation, it wasn’t much better either. In this game, the Bronx Bombers went 0-for-1 in a similar situation. However, unlike game 1, the Yankees couldn’t get as many hits as they had hoped for. Out of 5 hits, Soto and Austin Wells were responsible for 4.

With the hitters continuously disappointing, there’s a growing sense of worry among the Yankees fans. But even in this defeat, there was a small silver lining shining through for them.
Is it a lack of consistency or power that’s affecting the New York Yankees?
“I think we’re swinging it well, really,” Austin Wells said via New York Post. “I think they’ve had a lot of bounces go their way, I think the only thing we can do is keep going out there the next day…Overall, we’ve had good at-bats with good plans…We’ve hit hard balls right at guys, so I think it’ll sway.”

Wells was referring to the consistent hard hits that the Yankees are having right now. Even yesterday the team hit nine balls with an exit velocity of over 95 mph. However, three of them led to double plays. So, while the Yankees aren’t struggling with power, they’re certainly having problems with placing the ball.
Perhaps that’s why the squad looks relaxed even after consecutive losses. They know that even though things aren’t going their way, they are on the right track. But will this belief translate into an on-field win? That’s for time to tell.
