George Steinbrenner was the principal owner of the New York Yankees from 1973 until his death in 2010. Steinbrenner was the longest reigning club owner in MLB history. Under his ownership, the Yankees were 11-time American League Division champions and seven-time World Series winners.?
Steinbrenner got nicknamed ‘The Boss’ for his dominant nature. He approached the sport with a ‘win-at-all-costs’ motto. Steinbrenner was controversial for his raw outspoken personality and unpredictable staff firings. As feared and respected as he was, the players and support staff also enjoyed joking with him.?
The prank that enraged George Steinbrenner?
Through his massive spending and strict disciplining tactics, George Steinbrenner transformed the Yankees into a powerhouse. Nonetheless, the Yankees also had fun moments with Steinbrenner. Former Yankees batboy Luis Castillo mentioned one such incident in his memoir. Castillo was the Yankees batboy from 1998 to 2005.?
Back in those days, the batboys did not have to sign any mandatory confidentiality clause. They had the liberty to speak freely of their work experiences, post-departure from the franchise. So Castillo wrote a memoir titled, ‘Clubhouse Confidential.’?

In a segment of the book, Castillo wrote about a prank played on Steinbrenner. It was during the fifth game of the 2000 World Series against the New York Mets. The Fox News team taped the clubhouse. It was supposed to appear as a trick by the opposition team.?

With the game tied at 2-2 after the seventh inning, Steinbrenner was quite nervous. Yankees’ pitcher David Cone took the chance to point at a microphone taped under a table. Cone jokingly blamed the Mets for the act, saying to Steinbrenner, “They?ve got the room bugged.” To everyone’s amusement, a furious Steinbrenner replied, “Somebody get me a pair of scissors!”?
Passing on power to the younger generation
In 2006, fighting health struggles, George divided ownership duties among his sons, Hank and Hal. With health conditions taking a worse turn in 2007, George stopped taking active participation in administrative decisions. On July 13th, 2010, he died of a heart attack in his Florida residence. The Steinbrenner family’s organization, ?Yankees Global Enterprises LLC? still governs the Yankees.?
