Last week, the New York Mets designated Gary Sanchez for assignment after the catcher managed one hit in six at-bats and failed to solve the Mets’ catcher problem. But at the same time, the 30-year-old managed to find an appropriate landing spot in San Diego, a team that needs to fill a massive catching gap.

As a result, the two-time All-Star made the decision to sign with the San Diego Padres and reached his third new team in the same year – San Francisco Giants (though he didn’t play any game), followed by the Mets, and now the Padres.

The 30-year-old Sanchez, a nine-year MLB veteran, and two-time Yankees All-Star, has witnessed rather poor seasons over the last four years. However, considering the poor performance of the Friar’s catchers this season, acquiring Sanchez was a valuable decision for the team.

It is anticipated that Sanchez will join the team in Miami this week. His arrival strongly indicates that either Brett Sullivan or Austin Nola will likely be sent down before the start of the series on Tuesday.

After signing the contract, Padres general manager A.J. Preller spoke about Gary’s addition with positivity, and said, “At the catching spot, we’re looking for some more productivity. Gary’s a two-time All-Star, played on a good team in New York. He’s got some physical ability. I think it’s an opportunity, and a low-cost acquisition, to see if we can upgrade the catching spot and just change our mix for a little bit.”

While Sanchez’s addition inspired a few fans, others continued to believe that this addition wouldn’t remotely solve the Padres’ problems. This is how fans reacted to the news of Sanchez moving to San Diego:

Do you think Gary Sanchez will be able to help the struggling San Diego Padres make a return to the competitive National League West Division? While the Padres are strong on offense, their defense has been a major problem, and Gary Sanchez doesn’t have the greatest defensive numbers in the recent past either.
