Scott Boras has long been known as the ultimate puppet master in Baseball. Though that image of his got a little hurt last offseason, one can’t deny that he still holds most of the strings. And next offseason is perhaps the one where we’ll see Boras in his full glory, courtesy of Juan Soto’s free agency. But there was another Boras client years ago whose free agency generated a similar frenzy – Alex Rodriguez. And if one believes Rodriguez, he was willing to do anything possible to become a New York Yankees player.

There are multiple similarities between A-Rod and Juan Soto’s free agencies. The biggest one is their age. While Soto is 25, Rodriguez was around 24. Multiple teams were after A-Rod, who was pretty much the hottest player in all of baseball. Then, Scott Boras convinced Rodriguez to go to the Texas Rangers (a stint that didn’t prove to be particularly fruitful). Later, A-Rod was traded to the Yankees, and from there, things took an interesting turn.

During his appearance on The Michael Kay Show, the 3x MVP talked about his experience working with Boras. While Rodriguez agreed that Scott Boras was the one who “drove the bus” during his first free agency, the same was not the case the second time around. I drove the bus, Rodriguez said. “I said, ‘Scott I know there’s more money somewhere else. I don’t care about that I want to be a Yankee...a champion and I want to be remembered in Pinstripes.’”

Alex Rodriguez revealed that in 2007, he had two much better offers on the table that he rejected to remain a Yankee. “I think that’s what Juan Soto should do,” Rodriguez said. But will Soto do that? That’s a question that has no clear answer yet. After all, even A-Rod failed to convince Scott Boras the first time around (he wanted to be a Mets player but Boras declined).

So with that in mind, Soto’s free agency remains a giant mystery. Especially because his injury proved to be more of a false alarm than a serious issue.

Juan Soto’s recovery becomes a day-to-day affair for the New York Yankees

Juan Soto’s MRI revealed that he just had “inflammation” in his left arm. That’s a giant relief for the Yankees who’ve grown highly accustomed to the Dominican slugger’s brilliant offensive play. With the superstar’s recovery now a day-to-day affair, one can expect him to return relatively soon. Earlier fears arose about his left arm discomfort possibly leading to UCL troubles (similar to what Bryce Harper experienced in 2022).

But with those fears proving to be a little premature, the Bronx Bombers can focus on their future again. A quick and healthy return for Soto becomes a must. Because even though the Yankees’ squad is good, the hole left behind by Soto’s absence is hard to fill. That was proven yesterday when the Pinstripes’ hitting staff couldn’t find an answer to Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s brilliance. As for Scott Boras – only he knows what cards he holds.
