This offseason, the New York Yankees have made several moves – be it with Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, or Devin Williams. Sure, they lost some (can you get over the Juan Soto fact?), but they didn’t waste time. But while they checked bingo on their maximum moves, their third base feels like in a confusing state.
Gleyber Torres has left, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. is set to take the second. So this means that DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera have to cover the hot corner.
However, as spring training is approaching, the internal options are facing scrutiny. Now, there have been several rumors about their signings, but nothing much turned out to be true. One such constant name has been Noland Arenado, but that, too, seems like a distant hope now.

The idea was shunned by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who reported that the Yankees were a long shot for Arenado. And this sentiment was doubled down by Andy Martino of SNY.

Martino mentioned, “They have never seriously considered a trade for St. Louis third baseman Nolan Arenado, sources say,” putting all those speculations to rest. But is it all that surprising? Not really! Because Brian Cashman has a vision for the team and the offseason. Tbh, that doesn’t include an aging $260 million third baseman.
The New York Yankees instead chose to invest heavily in their pitching and outfield. They secured their foundational pieces, then tackled on a risky move with Nolan Arenado. Martino even ignored the idea of Alex Bregman in New York, admitting, “The Yankees did consider Alex Bregman earlier in the offseason, league sources say, but have long since allocated the dollars that might have been his to players like Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, and Devin Williams.”
But that doesn’t mean the Yankees have to search inwards only, even though they have options. There is still another name in the market.
Could the New York Yankees make a late move for 3B
So with Bregman and Arenado gone, there are other options that the NYY can turn to. In fact, Michael Brauner of Sports Illustrated thinks so too. He urged the team to consider Justin Turner for third – a 40-year-old veteran. But don’t be fooled by his age. He brings consistency to the plate.

Brauner mentioned, “His career .363 on-base percentage, a mark that has not seen a severe drop-off even with age, could be exactly what New York’s lineup needs.” Turner’s split last season between the Blue Jays and Mariners was .259 with a .737 OPS. Just two years ago, he had belted 23 home runs with 96 RBIs and an OPS over .800 for the Boston Red Sox. So he still has plenty of fire in his bat.
Now, the two-time All-Star is gearing up for this 17th MLB season. He may not be known for defense, but the Yanks might be willing to make the trade-off if it means keeping LeMahieu out of the lineup. Last season, LeMahieu had struggled, posting a .527 OPS over 67 games. Plus, Turner is a cost-effective alternative. So even if the Yankees stick with a platoon at third, he will be a clear upgrade over their current options.
