Boston Red Sox fans were treated or rather mistreated by a thorn to the eye, as a colossal billboard promoting Derek Jeter’s upcoming docuseries was erected outside Fenway Park, of all places. Every MLB fan is aware of the decades-long rivalry and what reaction would it receive to the publicity stunt. One thing is certain the decision won’t and didn’t go well with Boston Red Sox fans.

But wasn’t it all anticipated?

Derek Jeter: The Journey Continues

The seven-part Derek Jeter docuseries titled ‘The Captain’ is scheduled to premiere on ESPN and ESPN+ on July 18th. Created under the skillful production of Spike Lee and Mike Tolin, the documentation is directed by Randy Wilkins. The series aims to explore the man behind the mystery, i.e. Derek Jeter. Without a doubt, Jeter has remained one of the most prolific matchwinners to have ever donned the famous Yankees pinstripe jersey.

Director Randy Wilkins quoted, “I set out with this thesis statement that Derek is not just a great baseball player, but an American icon.”

But as the narrative goes, no matter how good someone might be, they can never be loved by all. A hero for someone is often a villain in another’s story. Somewhat a similar case between Derek Jeter and the Yankees’ prime nemesis Boston Red Sox.

Fans reacted to the news in different manners. Most of the Red Sox fans were not happy about it. Here are some of them:

One of the fans said: “The number of middle fingers it must be getting.” Showing his anger towards the act.

Meanwhile, another angry fan joined in and said: “Derek Jeter is one of the most overrated players in the history of sports. Not saying he’s not good, but not what he is made out to be.”

Yet another angry fan with a similar opinion added : “Easily the most overrated player in sports history.”

14 MLB All-Star appearances, five World Series Championships, and Hall Of Fame Induction is the stuff of dreams for many. It’s the record that the retired Jeter proudly displays to his name. But it still means nothing to the majority of Boston Red Sox fans. To the Red Sox community, Jeter was a figure that must fail on the playfield.

Focusing on all the facts, the daring marketing strategy for the documentary promotion might have proved worth the risk. What otherwise would have probably missed the attention of Red Sox fans has at least got them staring (albeit with fury). Though it’s unknown how many Red Sox supporters would care to tune into the docuseries.

The rivalry lives on

Red Sox and Yankees are set to lock horns again this season on July 7th. The Yankees fans are overjoyed with all the news flying around and might see these fixtures as a chance to further flex their muscles. Whereas for the Red Sox fans, these upcoming clashes are the perfect opportunity for vengeance.
