Is John Sterling's humor the secret sauce to enjoying Yankees games, even during blunders?

John Sterling never fails to add his signature flair to the action, and he really brought it during that baserunning blunder on Tuesday night! It was a wild sequence in Game 2 of the ALCS. After Jazz Chisholm Jr. was picked off second base, fans had a déjà vu: Anthony Rizzo, after driving home Anthony Volpe with a double, decided to take a chance and attempt to steal third. You can almost picture the scene—Rizzo going for it as the pitch gets away from the catcher, adding that layer of drama. But was Rizzo’s decision to go for third a smart gamble or a risky move?

While Hedges made a quick recovery and caught Rizzo in a tough spot between second and third, it resulted in quite a dramatic moment. And John Sterling had to come through with a classic line – his call perfectly captured the chaos of that play. “Hedges now throws to second. On the way to third, back to second, back to third. Tagged out, end of inning. Boy if that wasn’t the Yankees, that’s what they do. Run the bases like a bunch of drunks.” Sterling said, according to the New York Post. It’s great to hear that even at 86, Sterling still has that sharp wit and charm; as he tried to wrap up the call and toss to a break, he couldn’t help but chuckle over his own description.

That kind of laughter is contagious and makes the broadcast feel more like a conversation among friends. John Sterling came out of retirement just in time to be a part of the Yankees’ playoff push. Despite the baserunning blunder, the Yankees were able to maintain their composure and build on their dominance. Leading 4-2 at the time, the team really needed that extra cushion. Aaron Judge’s homer in the following inning was a big boost, adding two more runs and helping to solidify their 6-3 victory over the Guardians. This win gave them a solid 2-0 lead in the series, which is a huge advantage.

The Yankees won in Game 2 while Judge’s homers broke the drought

The Yankees really set the tone in Game 2 of the ALCS, jumping out to an early lead and chasing Guardians ace Tanner Bibee just two innings in! Even though the Guardians made a push with a two-run fifth to cut it to 3-2 and ended Gerrit Cole’s night, it was the Yankees’ bullpen that stepped up when it mattered most. And let’s not forget Aaron Judge – his first home run of the postseason was a huge moment, icing the game and sealing the 6-3 win for New York.

Aaron Judge’s two-run shot off Hunter Gaddis was a pivotal moment that really put the game out of reach for the Guardians, extending the Yankees’ lead to 6-2. It shifted the momentum firmly in New York’s favor. Taking a 2-0 lead in the series puts the Yankees in a strong position, but now, the series shifts to Cleveland. The crew can take some comfort in the fact that Tanner Bibee’s early exit means he should be available for another start sooner rather than later, especially after only throwing 39 pitches.
